was the alocasia rotting due to slug or tiny white bugs?
Comments (3)Thx to both Jean001 and bgreen! So would you say the same for the slug, also not causing problems but just eating decay? I was surprised to see a slug on an aroid. I don't think I have seen that before. Karen...See MoreColocasia and Alocasia Bulb Overwintering
Comments (6)See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taro . Note, "Taro is one of the few crops (along with rice and lotus) that can be grown under flooded conditions." I have overwintered (zone 5) potted colocasia gigantea within wet potting media in a cool dark basement for years without problems. I just cut the foliage off, bring the pot inside from outdoors (where it often rains), seal in a plastic garbage bag, and store at approximately 45 deg. Comments (29)Mimulus, what soil mix have you tried with the odora? Alocasias are adaptable but don't like 'wet feet' or very dry conditions. Here in central Fla I let the mix dry to an inch or two before watering, but daily rainy spells doesn't seem to bother them. I have mine in a mix of primarily unsifted pine bark mulch (from WalMart), with a little peat moss or styrofoam balls and a little perlite. I've successfully grown them in many other mixes using various proportions of Miracle-Gro, peat moss, pine bark mulch, perlite and/or vermiculite. They're really not too particular as long as the mix has air spaces and drains well. It would help if you turn on your Messaging. My email is bluesea14808@yahoo.com. If your interested in trades, I have quite a few alocasias and colocasias, including A. macrorhizos variegata. Also have a large collection of philodendrons, aglaonemas and other aroids, and sansevierias. Russ...See MoreAlocasia bulbs
Comments (16)I second the Regal Shields ID. From what I've read Mammoth and Jack's Giant are just Esculentas that got big and were propogated for their size. I had a Mammoth growing last year in full shade from 11am on and right next to a sprinkler head so it got plenty of water. It got to MAYBE 4' tall but overall very unimpressive as it only carried 3 or 4 leaves at a time. Next year I will try a spot with more sun. The Depot's by me don't have anything good yet, just the Esculenta mix in Jay's photo above. I don't have much faith in Depot's packaged products however. Last year I bought a packaged Diamond Head tuber and it grew out to some kind of plain green Xanthosoma looking plant. I wrote an email to the company but they wanted the package, receipt, product, etc mailed to them for a refund. Wasn't worth the time....See Moredbarron
