Upright Elephant Ears Hardiness Q.
Comments (5)Broomhildah, they are "root hardy" here in Birmingham. I always cut them down, fill a large black, plastic flower pot with chopped leaves and cap it upside down over the stumps for protection. Here it always comes back. I remove the pot of leaves around April 1. If frost threatens, I cover it with a flower pot. Next year, when frost time comes, just break off a few of the side shoots that come off the old trunk and plant them for plants to share with friends. If you plant your large one now, it will have time to become established before winter. Now, about the top. Cut it off near the ground after planting. The stump will put out new plants all around itself. Cut remaining stump to an appropriate length and stick it down into a large pot, maybe a 5 gallon bucket with drain holes. Place it in the shade. You will never know by looking that it was ever removed from the mother plant. It will root and you have another plant. If you have leftover stump pieces, I would stick them in a pot of soil and I believe they may root as well. Comments (7)Thank you! I had a feeling this was the only way to do it. I also was sure that the pot they have this thing is is way small for it. I do plan to plant it in a partial shade location right next to the back wall of my house. We do get some pretty bad winters every now and then, I was wondering will it die back to the ground level? If I cover it through the nights where it gets the coldest will it make it through the winter with foliage?...See Moreupright elephant ear
Comments (2)I also have a question about Elephant Ears. I bought the bulb in early April and a few days later I had a fall and broke a couple of bones. After surgery and a stint in a physical rehab facility, I came home to find that my husband had gone ahead and planted the EE in a pot outside. It looked dead and my neighbors though I should toss it, but I went ahead and peeled off some of the outer (stalks?), and it looks like in the middle there is something still alive. Hubby lifted it out of the pot and there are white roots so it is still doing something. Half of the plant is above the soil and the roots below. I hope we are doing this correctly. Hubby did not save the planting instructions and I doubt if he even read them. Any advice is very appreciated! Comments (4)Are you asking if it is safe or if it is a practice for your situation or both? This is the best I can tell you: I have an Alocasia calidora which is said to have come from Alocasia gageana and Alocasia odora. I inadvertently sliced off the bottom 3" off of the 17" corm/bulb with a shovel last fall: https://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/0db22dc40a04eb72_9-1859/home-design.jpg. You can also see where the bulb had 3 branches from 2 falls back that were also inadvertently sliced off with a shovel. I then dried and stored the main bulb. It has since been planted, has grown new leaves, and has bloomed several times. This is a pic of it today(on left): https://st.hzcdn.com/simgs/ca52e6e90ae6144b_9-7915/home-design.jpg...See MorePlanTing!
