Be sure to water your plants before the cold snap!

I know most of you know this, but just wanted to tell new FL gardeners that it's essential to water your plants well before a cold snap. I'm not really sure about the botanical mechanics of it (some horticulturist, huh? lol I never claimed to be a botanist!), but cold weather and winds dessicate (dry out) foliage so having as much water in them as possible helps save them from dropping. You don't have to have freezing temps to get leaf damage. It also protects the roots, since our ground hardly ever freezes.

But count your blessings. My friend in CA is on fire watch, and the Santa Anna winds were gusting up to 85 mph yesterday, so they had to shut the power grid down. She said the Santa Anna winds fry the foliage on some of her tenderer plants every year.
