The couch is modern and nice looking . Just get rid of the extra pillows and it will look more modern . Then decorate around it ..painting over it, lamps ..table ....flowers ...don't worry ..it will all look beautiful ones you are finished

If you aren't able to return the couch (which it sounds like you are not able to) then, I would focus on a rug that brings out or highlights the tones you want. The color seems to be the main issue for you. I wouldn't worry too much cause all the added accessories and furniture really do make a room and distract the eye on focusing on one element.

oh dear, now i see part of the problem, you think your entire house has to be one color. floors like sink hardware and drains do not count. you will not be changing your floor everytime you wish to decorate. this is why we tend to buy the rug first. your design area begins there. so lets look for a rug that goes with the sectional. we will go modern, to help end the concept that the couch is not modern. it looks like you like dk blue judging by the throw on the floor. so i will start there. love blue.

Nice rugs! Under the skylight a console table or cabinet with a vase of flowers or crystal would look lovely with sun on it.

The photos really help although I had to laugh because I had no idea what dark blue throw you were talking about until I looked back at the photos. That is actually my brother and sister in laws dogs bed. Lol! They were all here when they had to evacuate from the fires. But good eye!

I don't think the sofa is traditional at all. Are the walls gray or are they white? The sofa and walls seem too close in color (and THAT could be what's making it feel dated). I love one of the pillows another contributor posted. I wouldn't be so quick to ditch the pillows that came with the sectional, especially if they are down filled. Gorgeous covers are available (etsy, ebay) and will change the whole look. I've seen designers meld grays and browns (cool & warm colors) by using a rug and/or pillows with some of each (plus a splash of whatever colors you decide on for pillows, throws, etc.) If there is room, moving the sofa out of the corner into the room so the sofa faces the doors would open it up (IF the room is wide enough). Getting rid of the tv stand as you already are planning will lighten the room as well. I've seen gray furniture with very pale green walls and it's a lovely combination. This photo from iltribuno shows gray furniture with cool off-white walls. I like the white rug but...how the heck does anyone live in a room and keep a white rug white. (and yes I realize this room is larger than yours but notice the lack of any large furniture, other than the sofas. minimalist modern chair, tv mounted on the wall (as you are planning to do) no end tables so only ceiling lighting and floor lamp. I don't know what the wiry lights are dangling from the ceiling but IMO they're just too much, as is the stenciled wall and stripes behind the tv. Think both would grow old fast. Once you decide on an accent color, think about keeping things as simple as possible with occasional pops of the accent color. In this room, green is used in the planter and in....can't tell...basket(?) by the TV. very subtle but does break up the monchromatic theme. BTW you're not alone. Most of us have loved a piece of furniture in the store and hated it in our home and most of us don't have the resources to just chuck it and start over. I think you can make this work by relocating the sectional to start. Live with it for a few days (or weeks) before exploring colors/designs for the rug pillows coffee table an lamps. I'm in my own home a month and realizing that things I detested and planned on completely renovating.....are actually workable with some minor modifications.

You can buy feet to add a bit of height and change the look. My daughter bought some on Amazon for their sofa and it updated their sofa for little money.

here's another featuring huge sofa in a room smaller than yours. this is from cr.emedemujer Again green is the accent color but the walls appear to me to be a pale tan. Purple can be a nice accent for gray. I see yellow used with gray but that combo almost makes me ill. Others love it, so who knows? (meanwhile I'm struggling with furniture in my own home. It felt fine in a condo (large open airy space) but some pieces are too heavy in the smaller living room in this house. It took me three weeks just to find lampshades to update lamps that I already had. (after the first few attempts, it became a chore). Take your time (and put all your receipts in a zip lock so you can return pieces that don't work for you It took FIVE lampshade purchases before I found the right ones). Stop beating yourself up over the sectional. It's fine....just needs some adjustments.

and the use of color in this room is over the top nauseating (IMO), but see how the sectional works in the middle of the room. (click here large sofa in small spaces) similar jewel tone pillows might work for you in an otherwise neutral gray room. That's it from me.

so amber, what do you think. I like your appreciation, but i would really like knowing what you want, which rugs or which colors, what strikes your fancy?

@Amber Abbitt, I see 2 different sectionals. I took screen shots of them and placed them side by side. The one you posted halfway through this thread is indeed different than the one in your room.

The one on the left, below, has a seam in the middle of the seat cushions, while the one on the right has 2 seams, one at top and one at the bottom (called a box cushion). Also the left sectional has 3 back cushions while yours has 4 (maybe you ordered a longer one?). And finally, there is and extra "seam" on the base of the sectional you have that does not appear in the product photo on the left. It's hard to tell at this angle the the sectional you have appears to have a slightly rounder shape on the inside of the arms.

These are subtle differences, but you may have received the wrong item. If the photo on the left is what you ordered, it is not what you received.

So happy you can return it! You were so unhappy. I’d ask Houzzers what size couch is best for your room since this one seemed too big.

I think you need blue tape to tape out a sofa and a few chairs to get a feel for the sizes that you need.

You might also view Houzz photos...maybe “small living rooms” “small tv rooms”....etc......for layout and couch size ideas .....

If you post the size of the space, i can do a scale drawing for you with suggested furniture sizes.

Well, I don’t want to be a rabble-rouser, but if the store sent a sofa other than what you ordered, they sure shouldn’t charge you a restocking fee. I’d check on that.

If they sent the wrong sofa/sectional then that’s on them. No restocking fee is in order. Politely but firmly reject that idea.

The couch was what I ordered, it just doesn’t work in my space. I will pay the restocking fee and am happy to get rid of it.

A couch in a corner is never a good look. I agree with the comment about having a plan. I would suggest a plan to include an area rug, art, lighting, coffee table and maybe an end table. The couch is really the least important element.

It is sort of unclear what this room is meant to be.....if the den is adjoining ....do you watch tv there?....and what room does the opening with post go to ?...

You resisted posting a pic from the sliding doors but I still think this would help in this dilemma....

Judging by the size it doesn’t seem like this was meant to be a living room?...is there another use for this room? If it is close to the kitchen could it be a dining area?...also any furniture arrangement needs to be oriented to look right from the view through the opening as well...

OK, I have tried my best doing a scale drawing for your room, but I have several questions about the wall that the office is behind. So, I made some assumptions. If I have some wall on that side of the room, it lays out best in the Option 1 drawing. See Option 1.

If I don't have a wall on that side of the room that is adequate for a 84" long sofa, then Option 2 might work.

Option 2

With this layout a small bench could fit under that high window and a console table could sit on the short wall that is the office side wall. The TV would go on a console to the left of the French Doors. The sofa length can be no longer than 84" and 36-40" deep. Two swivel chairs would keep the space functional for conversation or watching TV. This maintains a walkway behind the sofa, because you need to keep that traffic path open by at least 3'. The room has to accommodate the French Doors opening into the room, but I suspect only one is used while the other is usually locked in place. So, hoping the right side is locked into space. In any case, I left sufficient room for them to open and not hit the swivel chair nearby. I know I don't have the exact right sizes of doorways on the office side wall, but the length is same as total length you put on your drawing, so it should be representative. Hope this gives you some good information to make decisions about a new sofa and a couple of chairs. The coffee table is 48" x 24" and then two small "drink" tables beside each swivel gives everyone seated a place to set a drink or a book, etc.

You got lucky! Don’t rush out to buy a new sectional. Use a measured sketch of your room to decide what size sofa you should get. A sectional demands that you put it together the way it was built: too big, too plush, too heavy-looking, too boring. A sofa or two and a pair of comfortable chairs gives you more freedom in arranging your room. Plus...it is more comfortable to sit in a chair with arms than to be stuck between two people on a sectional with nowhere to put your own arms. Look at furniture with less bulky lines, narrower arms, thinner back and seat cushions. Consider the floor color when looking at rugs and furniture. Wall color can easily be changed. Gray is boring. Get two chairs in a patterned fabric or a patterned rug. If everything is a solid color, there is no life to the room. Hang art on the walls. Use window treatments for adding color. You need some small tables for holding a lamp or putting a drink or plate on. When you shop in a nice furniture store, their displays are vignettes of rooms with accessories and rugs. Take some of their ideas for your own house.

Before purchasing new items - post them so that we can comment.

Ritasj here’s a view of the room from the French doors. (Ignore any and all furniture... nothing in this room is staying. Chairs are old and NOT ANY indication of our style and are being “stored” there until they are picked up by charity and my giant couch is being protected with blankets and a doggy gate so that I will have no issues returning it!!! Lol!

To someone else who was asking about the space, and what it’s intended for. We have a totally separate living room, so this space would be considered the smaller family room or open den. (Lots of doors and windows to contend with.) Kitchen is located just on the other side of the wall where my ugly couch is. The dining area is the corner on the other side and behind the post that’s to the right of the chairs, there’s also a built in breakfast nook if you take a hard right at the chairs, and the office is on the other side of the wall where the TV is. The door to the left of the chairs leads to a small step down room with a fireplace that we have no idea what we’re going to use it for. No, it can’t be a TV room so kindly don’t suggest it. :)

Hopefully that helps whomever asked to get a better idea of the space.

I think I finally figured out the basic space. Those photos confirm. I don't think you have many options in this room but here is a layout. Key think, you can only use a sofa of about 84" long on that wall and have any space for additional seating. Trying to post Option 3, which is very much like you have it. But some variations.

I have placed a area rug of 8 x 10 approx. in the room to anchor the space. If you use two chairs, they have to be 28" wide or less. In fact, realistically, you can only use one chair and have any reasonable traffic pattern. TIP: don't get a rug with a pattern, do something neutral or minimal in pattern and definitely no medallion. That wouldn't work in this space. Hope these things help. It is a difficult space, as you no doubt know. Too many doors and openings, etc. Is this the best use of this space is my question? Your drawing shows a "den" so is that where the family gathers? Sure glad you could return that sectional. Big plus there.

In reality this room is really a foyer....I wouldn’t try to turn it into tv room.....in a new home with a challenging floor plan like this it is hard to address the rooms as if they are all separate spaces .....all the spaces need to flow and relate in a way that works....so many things that we don’t know about must be considered...you need a really talented designer...on site...to help you create an overall plan that gives you specific guidelines before you begin to select furnishings and decor....for a good result I don’t think this can be done piecemeal...

This has to be one of the best dilemmas I've read in a very looooooong time. @Flo Mangan has great suggestions,can't quite decide which I prefer so hope the OP can! Personally,I like the eccentric too many windows/weird footprint/odd path rooms. Harder to get right but they reap the best rewards. As for small unusual rooms that no one knows exactly what to do with....here are a couple pics of similar situations....

Only 2 people usually sit on a regular size sofa. That’s why I would never buy a sectional. Take it back if you can.

I wanted to thank everyone for your suggestions update you on how the room looks now. I was able to return the ugly couch and get a new, much lower profile sectional that me and my husband both love. We’re not quite finished with the room, but in my opinion, it looks a million times better!!
