Celerygirl- do you think it has to be that traditional?

I could see a black one with a decorative pillow, a silver one the color of the pulls, a rich contrasting wood, or a bright color like below. Wishbone chairs look uncomfortable to me so I would probably use one or two as guest chairs.

acm- yes that is the exact kind of contrast I was going to attempt to pull off. How come it works so well in some instances while looking really disjointed in others?

I’m really just trying to incorporate one of these chairs into my house since I randomly decided that I love them and I’m furnishing my house anyway.

Keep in mind that the arms of most of the chairs shown prevent the chair from being tucked under the desk when not in use.

Keep in mind that the wishbone chairs make no sense with the desk.

But Jan- When then does it make sense to contrast modern and traditional? How come sometimes when other people do it it looks fantastic? Is it just a preference thing? Or does the room need some other quality that I don’t understand. This reminds me of high school when everybody looked super cute & sun kissed after spray tanning or using bronzer while I came out looking like a carrot.

Thinkdesign- yes I should have considered the arm height. That’s the problem I ran into with the original chair I tried to pair with my desk.

I do like the chair you suggested- do you think I could get away with fitting this one? Maybe it would push in part of the way?

The tops of the arms of the chair will end up ruined. Do you have space to use it as a side chair with your desk instead?

That was LOL funny. Juxtapositions are great! But they need a bit of some sharing as well. If you love the wishbone chair, it's probably fine as a accent in a room elsewhere? I don't "feel" it with that desk......below? Yes,,,,,,in order too : )

Think & TQ- yess, I may have to stick the wishbone chair in my living room. It can take the place of my rattan side chair which was recently christened with both cat pee and a hairball.

I don’t know, nothing is really “striking me” like the wishbones did. Maybe I just need to meditate on it a little bit more.

Sticking my nose here long after everyone else did, I think looks-wise the chair would work with the desk but I have concerns about function -- both the arms and the seat with the raised part of the front corners.

It depends on what you are going to do at the desk. If you are only going to write handwritten letters with pen and ink, you don't need the same ergonomic configuration that is needed with keyboards and screens.

It will still need a chair when you're done meditating, Not sure that is the desk for you. There are plenty of desks that will take a wishbone. Not that one. : )

Becky- oh I love this lady! She’s from New York and I understand all of her references lol. I will read up because honestly I’m still really confused about how to match furniture. I guess it’s the same thing with clothing. It takes some practice to pick up on the nuances of what works & what doesn’t

Oh Jan- you should have seen the campaign I launched to justify buying this big fancy desk! Even if I grow to hate it (I don’t, I love it), pretty much have to become an old woman in it or I lose all of my credibility for future furniture lobbying.

Then get a chair that makes some SENSE with it hon. : ) I love escargots. I love a great PB AND J on toast. Not together.

I think the desk can skew either traditional or modern. I would concentrate more on what fits re: the desk and the person using it. This is where I would probably give the edge to function over form, unlike all those "home offices" styled to bits by "design bloggers" which don't look like you could work at the desk for more than five minutes. More than once I've looked at pics of rooms where I know I'd end up throwing the chair through the window after one day.

I was thinking more WWLD in terms of mixing.

But in terms of $, she tends to save wherever she can so she can splurge on certain things, like wallpaper and fabric, and she loves sales. And she's queen of the bargain shoppers for her own apartment!

I too would love to learn how to mix traditional and modern styles because I love both!

Would the Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chair go with your desk? In white or black?

Or what about this Beetle dining chair by Gubi? I'd see it in a (leopard print) velvet.

A comfortable one.

Not a pro. More interested in comfort and function than "style".

Suggest you sit in any chair you're considering buying and at least consider a chair w/short armrests (short horizontally) for resting your elbows but not necessarily the full length of your arms -- arm rests that will not interfere w/placing the chair as far beneath the desk as possible.

Allergy noted. If not a chair with casters/wheels, choose one with or add glider feet so you could move it around easily w/o scratching the floor so you can be sitting where you need to be to use the desk.

Do measure the height of the table from floor to the top of the table -- the total table height. Do measure the vertical knee space -- the height between the floor and the bottom of the table at its center point. Make sure the chair you choose has you sitting high enough to actually be comfortable using the chair with the desk.

Unless you're wanting to add your favorite bold color to the room, choose black because it will be neutral and because the desk appears to be either very dark gray or black.

If you're actually planning to use this desk as a desk, then limiting yourself to something akin to a formal dining room chair makes no sense at all unless you're more interested in appearance than function. You might even consider an upscale swivel bar stool in lieu of a traditional chair.
