I agree that art would be ideal above the sideboard. For the top a collection of elegant taper candle holders or perhaps a bowl or tray that has meaning for you. Fresh flowers or an elegant orchid seem to work well atop most any flat surface. Perhaps a well edited combination of the above.

Do you have plans to change your chandelier? If so, consider something more more contemporary to compliment your dining table and chairs..

Consider using a color lighter or the same as the dominant wall color....the cabinet is getting lost due to it being the same color as the wall.....warm up the wall, choose brass/gold accent trim color/metal for what ever you put on the console....also might want to change out the hardware to more modern style for the console.

This unusual mantle reminds me of your piece; possibly a good cleaning and waxing of you console might even up the stain a bit and give it a more polished look and feel.

W are chagrin g the color of the walls in the entire house and yes that chandelier is being taken down for a more contemporary one

I would begin by repainting the room. Too much brown in this room.

I'd find another spot in your home for that piece. Get a console that better suits the niche size, chairs and other elements. Then hang a nice big piece of art. Don't worry about what you set atop, but lamps are always lovely. I agree, the paint is too dark and saturated either way, and I am all for losing the vertical blinds as well.I'll confess I do not get the light with the chairs..........either.

Well. We have a very contemporary rug, equally contemporary chairs, an industrial orb light, and a mid 20th century cabinet, a bit lost in its space. I'm all for eclectic, but sometimes a piece simply is better somewhere else. Jmho that is the case here. Too many "ideas" in the room. All set against a jumpy background of too much contrast between wall color, trim, blinds etc. Sorry, it's what I see.

A lovely, tall gilt mirror would look nice. Candlesticks or a silver tea service could also go on it.

I'm not crazy about that wall color. Your wood just blends right into it making the entire room a bit of a brown hole.

Jan Moyer, as I said previously in my comment, we r painting the whole house so that diningroom is going to be a completely different color, a lighter color and I also mentioned that the orb light is coming down, i also mentioned at the beginning that the cabinet it a sentimental piece from my husbands family so it won’t be moving anywhere, the blinds are staying so please respond and work with what will be there, thanks.

Anglophilia the room is going to be creams and blacks so no silver tea tray, that’s a bit old school, as you can see in the photos my colors are maple , creams and black, I’m thinking of a low artificial arrangement that has calla Lillie’s and other colors but not too much and a nice framed and matted picture on the wall above, to me canvas with no frames looks cheap.

No Mirror because I have enough through the house

Flower Girl, the art you choose will be very helpful in informing the right wall color - as in which shade of off-white, greige or beige. So, get art first. I know you want to keep you vertical blinds, but I must say that fabric shades for your windows would be a wonderful way to take your dining room in the direction you're wanting to go.
