If it's becoming a problem it's worth investing in a really good new dishwasher and the proper detergent. Miele, for instance, has environmentally responsible dishwashers for which you only need to scrape solids off, can put anything anywhere because there's no heating element, a push open the door at the end feature which lets out steam, aiding the convection drying, and uses the new enzyme based tabs that eat all the goo. In other words, just about anything can be put in this kind of dishwasher, without much attention, and come out clean. :)

When Hubby does the dishes, I cringe, though I always thank him.

It's just that I always find a chip or crack in something, and he never wipes down the counter, sink or backsplash.

We haven't had a dishwasher in years, other than the human kind. We had a portable one, but it died and we never replaced it. I like having the space, since our kitchen is very tiny.

I digress to announce that after three years without a working (non human) dishwasher, we are finally getting one!

The hold up has been that I am on strike against consumer appliances because they don't even last a decade anymore. And the new dishwashers take so long to run a load.

But I finally found an affordable used undercounter commercial dishwasher. Really affordable, like $250 for a heat sanitizing Hobart. So I've been installing the necessary 240v 50a circuit and etc for this monster.

Yes, I know, they need scraping and pre washing and so on. For my clean as you go habits, this will work great. SWMBO is doubtful but her friend who used to own a restaurant talked her into it.

The issue has nothing to do with having a dishwasher or not, I assure you.

FWIW, hubby does not cook anything other than his own meals, and that's enough of a mess for me!

And my sister, a sweet, sweet person whom I love dearly, has been a full time working mom since before her kids were born and has had cleaning ladies for many years now. She just piles stinky catfood cans, dishes caked with food, half full coffee cups & peels, half eaten food, etc. into the sink at their house and leaves it there. I believe her sink is a hazardous waste site!

I cook ...he cleans up.. When we reverse rolls it is not a pretty picture.

When I cook, I clean up after myself - I never expect anyone to clean a mess that I make, even if it is to make a meal. My grandmother was the opposite - she felt that if she cooked, someone else should clean up, but I'm not like that. I appreciate it if someone helps me clean up, but I don't expect it.

My grandmother felt compelled to clean up at someone else's house if they cooked for her, and once she broke an antique bowl that our great-grandfather had brought over from Germany. I think my aunt may have preferred washing her own dishes after that.

Husband does the shopping, I cook, he cleans up. Works for me!

Hmmmm. I do the grocery shopping, I cook, he washes most the dishes. Every so often I wash them so I can get them clean - ha. Plus, there are other areas of the kitchen he ignores. As I cook, I put the sticky dishes in hot soapy water. I wash utensils I use repeatedly, and if I've got a big dirty pot I'll fill it with hot, soapy water and go ahead and do the dishes with it. DH used to say that I created extra dishes because I wasn't washing them... so not true!

After a period of time, DH started saying "I'll do them in the morning" which would be fine, but he didn't. Ugh!

We have/had a dishwasher, so that's not the issue, BUT we are remodeling (she says for the umpteenth time) and are getting dish drawers so we can put all pots, pans, utensils in a drawer and run it every night... I'm hoping this will solve the whole "I'll wash them in the morning" issue, and give me time to clean up the kitchen where DH misses. You know, the small hidden areas no one thinks about or sees, like the countertops...

This thread brings to mind the time my BF made chili rellenos. There were piles of dishes and pans everywhere and beaten eggwhites on the cupboards. lol!

The rule in our house is if you cook the others clean. My daughter and sometimes my son makes dinner, and they try to make as few dishes as possible (washing spatulas for a second use, not using pans that aren’t needed) which works out great because then I can do other things while they cook!

HAhahahahaha! Bragu, I needed that laugh this morning! Aaack no! I truly don’t like eating out. Between the fast food, and the rare sit-down dinner out which never tastes as I think it should, I sorely miss my own cooking : ) And you sound like every relative and friend I have… “why is it taking you guys so long?” Well… it just is! Prove it? Hmmm… Well, I got up at 5:00am this morning to get an early start – before I began my day job I had to fill in the last screw holes in the subfloor with wood bondo (idjits who installed the tile put it on top of the vinyl which was on backerboard, which was screwed past the subfloor into the crawlspace, leaving it open to crawlspace ‘odors’). Weekend work typically, but I spent last weekend winterizing the exterior.

But to be truthful, if I could cook now, I wouldn’t want to… no time, and too tired and dirty.

DH and I have yet to file for divorce… ; ) You know, the only time we argue we are actually in full agreement, but too tired (or stubborn) to listen to the other person and realize it!
