Hello! I've only been doing this since the start of summer so I'm new too. I don't have much expertise to draw upon but after reading your info the question I want to put out to anyone is: Is it even possible to grow a healthy pineapple sage in a SIX inch pot?? When I bought mine, it was already about 8 inches tall and came in one of those 2 x 2 inch containers. I bought a 14 inch pot to plant it in at the same time...just because I couldn't see putting it in anything smaller than that. This was only about 3 weeks ago. I just went outside and looked at it and it's now about 18 inches tall and I definitely couldn't imagine it being in a container that's any smaller. I also have another question. Although it's very healthy looking with nice growth, I've noticed that the tops of the stems have white hairy fuzz on them that I had never noticed before. Is this normal? There's no fuzz on the leaves (thank God!). I think I remember that African violets have fuzzy stems (which has kept me from panicking just yet), but I thought I had better ask in case this is some sort of fungus. Thanks! P.S. I hope you don't mind my throwing in a question of my own while we're on the topic of pineapple sage. I'm not trying to usurp your post or anything...

Thanks for the responses, everyone. The pineapple in dangermouse's photo looks like the type bought at the grocery store âÂ" a smooth cayenne, I'm assuming? âÂ" and I'm familiar with determining whether those are ready; in a couple of my photos, you can see those pineapples either in the background or on the periphery. (By the way, good show, dangermouse âÂ" I mean, good name!) However, these pineapples I'm trying to identify have pretty different coloration: They start out fluorescent pink and have changed to a sort of pale, even etiolated, yellow; from what I remember of the one or two pineapples I saw on my neighbor's bushes several years ago, I don't expect them to change to that rich golden yellow that smooth cayennes attain. The other problem is that the whole plant (and, by extension the crown of the fruit) is covered with some pretty brutal spines. This makes it difficult to get in and sniff. Nevertheless, I've tried, but either this thing doesn't smell like anything (yet) or I can't get in close enough. All my other pineapples âÂ" there were ten that ultimately came from store-bought fruit âÂ" have either come in or gotten eaten by animals. These pineapples âÂ" I think I forgot to mention that I have two âÂ" appeared later than the others, so it makes sense that they'd be the last that are ready. But I have no idea what clues to look for. Would it be a terrible idea to just bring one in and set it on the counter until it starts to either smell like something or look like it's about to start fermenting?

Either :-) But in your climate (frost free), I'd plant outside. Or in a large enough container to accommodate growth but that can be moved into some protection should temps drop below freezing. Be careful about fertilizing - apparently they can be quite sensitive. And the more sun they receive the better the likelihood they will produce fruit.
