Wood floor, Step Down to LR- Avoiding falls?
Comments (4)We have both a step down FR and a step down LR. We plan to raise the FR floor to match the kitchen height creating a very large room (and it allows me to extend the kitchen portion during the remodel). In order to raise the LR floor, I would need to rebuild the fireplace since it is on ground level. Instead, we plan to build cabinets on the LR side of the step down with doors accessible from the hallway and the LR. I'm not sure the exact height of the cabinet, but since this cabinet is within 3' of the DR, I plan to make this function as a server, too....See MoreBad fall down finished wood stairs: step edges down to bare wood
Comments (7)Finish: Pacific Strong, a discontinued Bona waterbased urethane finish in two coats was applied over Duracraft stain. Chipping: small 1/8th" or bigger pieces of wood individually chip out from the wood floor upon light contact by shoes, full plastic laundry basics, kitchen garbage cans.An opening is left in the floor which is blond, like bare oak. It's not flaking off as I've seen can happen with drums during refinishing, nor are their wavy lines periodically. Rather it's chipping off with contact, as when a tree limb is placed in a chipper/shredder machine outdoors. As to the stairs, well both the stain and the finish are gone on the edges of the steps (the rounded part at the stair end). Bare wood remains and is very slippery compared to the rest of the step, where stain and finish give it a rougher surface texture. You can see the difference on the step and you can feel the lack of any finish on the edges, precisely where it is needed most. We keep the house humidified and run house temp at 64 in the winter. We don't abuse our floors. Thanks for your response. In all my many years owning several homes, I have never encountered anything like this....See MoreA Fall down 13 Steps--What A Stressful Night (LONG)!!!!
Comments (9)This reminds me of when I had DS in the car seat on the kitchen counter. He was 5 months old. I was standing in front of him feeding him rice cereal. I backed away TWO STEPS to the refrigerator and he arched his back and the car seat tipped forward and he slid out- right onto the kitchen floor like a burial at sea. I was in a panic. He cried like crazy for the first 5 minutes or so then got really quiet. Like he was falling asleep. I was home alone with him at the time and I freaked out. Kept thinking his little brain was bleeding or swelling or something awful, so I called 911. They sent the cops AND and ambulance but when the cops got here he perked right up the little stinker. Took him over to the ER anyway just to be sure, but boy I was a wreck. Felt like the worst mother on the planet. Just this week my 2 1/2 yo DD ran full speed smack into the dining room buffet thing. Hit it so hard it knocked her back on her behind. It actually put a crease in her skin on her forehead. Scared the wits out of me It it totally awful when your baby gets hurt. Thanks God they seem to be made of rubber sometimes. BTW, the ER doc said unless they "loose consciousness", it's usually fine. Also check their pupils. If they're equal in size and they react to light, that's another good sign. But that throwing up thing would have scared me, too....See MoreHow do we prevent the other trees from going the way of the dead one?
Comments (5)i would think that the removal of the large ... or as you say.. giant.. ficus ... was the beginning.. presumably sun levels changed.. and then watering patterns also changed ... just probably causing all around stress ... conifers are trees.. and with such.. we talk in tree time ... which is usually counted in decades ... so what happened 3 years ago.. could be just now causing the issues ... wonder what embo is seeing on the left??? ... thats wall white shining thru in some places???? ken...See MoreKathleen Austin
