My dying Song of India
Comments (6)Howdy Eayeary, Like you, I love the clearance or what I call Dead Cart plants. lol Of course, there's a limit. Thank God, I've been lucky choosing plants w/o hitch-hikers. Which Song of India did you get? Green, medium variegated or Golden? Reason I ask is Golden is one fussy plant. Maybe lack of green has something to do with it. When buying plants from the Dead Cart, always check leaves and soil. If I found a plant in the dead cart with Mealy Bug, 'as much as I love plants,' I'd not only pass up one plant but the entire shabang. However, if a plant had Mites, 'a plant I really wanted,' you bet it'd end in my cart. Stop with the poisons. Please. Harsh chemicals are only weakening your Song. If the Song was mine, I'd remove from the pot, TOSS soil, pot and roots from the two dead songs. Then let sit in soapy water 10-15 minutes. Rinse and re-rinse. Repot in new container, 'not too big,' and fresh, dry, well-draining medium/soil. Water thoroughly until water flows out of 'drainage holes.' The first 3 days it'd sit in semi-shade, not complete dark. Day 4, medium light. Leaves would be inspected and sprayed daily. The golden needs a lot more humidity, so if by chance you have the gold, a vented, plastic bag, would provide humidity. Spider Mites are easily killed. Soapy water usually does the trick, but I also make a home-made mix of garlic, mouth wash, 'Listerine, generic is fine,' hot pepper, 'powdered,' and citrus. Mix the night before, and spray away..no need to discard. A second application, as a precaution is necessary. For Aphids..Ladybugs love Aphids..Problem is no one but me would keep ladybugs in their house, lol. Second best is Yellow STicky Traps. They're inexpensive and chemical-free..These traps capture all flying insects. They're great! I have no idea what the soil insect, sometimes milipedes and other outdoor bugs find a way in soil. It might or might not be harmless to plants.. Harmless or not, I don't like creepy-crawlers in the house. LOL. Creepy Crawlers meaning spiders, milipedes, centipedes.. ladybugs are okay..lol Songs don't like direct south or west sun. Bright light is sufficient. Mine sits off the side of an unobstructed south window, but it doesn't get direct sun. If anything, it gets more east light. Good luck, hope your Song of India does well, Toni...See MoreHow I fell in Love with Brugs. Questions & Pics
Comments (10)Karyn1, Thank you! Ya know, I hadn't even thought about looking for a bugger that blends in---no wonder I didn't see anything yesterday while searching for whatever it is that is having lunch at my Brug's expense. I found a rather icky looking green spider that had a bee tethered to long single webbing but the spider stayed inside the flower all day and night, with bee dangling. After responding to these posts I am going to go look up hornworm and later today I'll look more closely at the underside of the leaves. Wonderful information -- Thanks again! Neonposey, Thank you so very much for your sweet words! Whenever someone new goes out to the back yard and starts praising my Double Delight Tree or any of my other little plants, I find myself re-directing them to my Brug. Sort of like one of those stage mothers that want all the attention on their one special child while slighting her other kids in the process. It's as if I want ALL the attention on my Brug --- nothing like being TBO (Totally Brug Obsessed) huh? And to think, I'm this protective of just one Brug--I can't imagine what would happen to me if I had any more like you all do - Yikes! LOL Karmahappytoes, Thank you for that information! You know, living in S. Calif. one doesn't know from day to day what's going on with the weather. Just when I thought we were really into Autumn and put a thermo blanket on the bed, up comes 90 degree weather the early part of this past week and I had already adjusted my watering habits for Autumn a couple weeks before. So now that you said 'dried out', I'm wondering if maybe that hot spell we had last week had something to do with it? All I know is that I baby my Brug -- my family calls it "Mom's precious Angel Baby" and I had never noticed anything like this so I'm going to really watch closely the watering situation from now on. Thank you again! Sibhskylvr, Awww, thank you so very much for your kind words--means a lot! Technodweeb, Hadn't thought about it that way before ...'Ugly Duckling of plants' LOL. Love it! I too had done a bit of searching on the web for the browning, crunchy that is happening before the flower is even open but couldn't find anything. I didn't search for hours but did search. That's what made me start looking here at GW. First I looked in the S. Calif. Discussions. Did a search there and some other discussions and somehow ran into this discussion board exclusively for Brugs. You can probably imagine how excited I was to find you all! I have two local nurseries, both are privately run. We must be going to the closest at the wrong times because it seems to always be closed whenever we go by with plans to stop. The other is run by a very nice old man. You ask him what time it is and he'll tell you how to make a Swiss Watch. He doesn't seem to be able to stay on topic and I never really get answers to my questions. But he does have some wonderful plants at great prices although he doesn't have any Brugs. The other two 'nurseries' within decent driving distance are Home-Depot and Lowes. You and Karmahappytoes both mentioned the drying/water and as I told Karmahappytoes, we did have unusually dry/very hot weather last week. I had already changed my watering habits for the onset of Autumn when we were hit with 90+ degree weather out of nowhere. We don't have a sprinkler system, I hand-water all my plants. Now that you've both mentioned it, it's probably likely that I didn't adjust my watering to compensate for those hot, hot days. I'll be more careful from now on, that's for sure! Thank you so much for your time and your comments---so appreciated! I spent most of last night browsing here at the Brug forum. In and out of discussions and jotting down new-to-me information on a pad next to my computer. I got more information here, from all these discussions about Brugs than I ever got searching the web! You all are not only gracious to give freely of your time and knowledge but witty and funny, too! Thank you all again so very much!...See MoreMom fell out of bed
Comments (6)Mimi, that was also one of my biggest fears: Mom falling and us not hearing her! I had a large school-bell beside her bed that, if she needed me, she could ring or shove onto the floor: there's no way to ignore that sound! We also tried an intercom, but she never did get the knack of buzzing us even when she was lucid, so a baby monitor is the way to go. The one thing I'm concerned about are the bed rails. Statistically, our elderly are more severly injured by trying to climb over bed rails when they need to get out of bed than just slipping onto the floor from bed. That's why they're not used in many nursing homes. There are rails that attach to the bed and are only a foot or more wide to give them something to grasp onto when getting into and out of bed, and that may help...Does your Mom have wall-to-wall carpeting in her room? If not, maybe a very large, stable one could be used to cushion a slip out of bed? Also, do you know why she fell? Was she trying to get out, or did she just turn over and fall? Perhaps pillows, or a large body-pillow tucked under her blankets along the edge could help re-direct her turning over? She may not be getting up in the middle of the night yet, but there will come a time, and rails scare me.... Anyway...I'm glad to hear she only broke a nail! Good grief. I hope you find a solution for her...maybe putting her bed against a wall, or positioning a dresser beside her bed? Good luck, I've been there, and I know how frightening it all can be! Thank heavens she's loving her new home and is vitually THRIVING in it! She's so happy and always has something new to tell us about! What a miracle! But what a decision to have had to make! Blessings Linda...See MoreMy current 'feel good' song
Comments (16)I like LOTS of different music, although I've never been able to get into rap, somehow. Nancy, I like that song too, it's about home, and summers and being a kid and less responsibility, when all there was to do was sit on the beach at Lake Michigan all day and around the campfire all night. It WAS our childhood. So, although I'm not a huge fan of Kid Rock, even if he is from Michigan (yeah, so is Madonna and I'm not a big fan of hers either, LOL), I love that song. Oh, and karen? I want a shirt with those sleeves. (grin) Actually, that was a favorite song of mine too. Right now, though, my favorite song is a toss up between the CD that Renee (beanthere) sent me of Charo with her classical guitar and Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy by Jim Croce. Elery says his current favorite feel good song (although he's a big fan of MoTown and broadway tunes) is one by Josh Turner because it reminds him of me. Ah, yeah.... I tried and tried, but I can't link it, neither my work computer nor my Vista at home will let me do that, but here are the lyrics. I love Josh Turner's voice, mostly... When I look in her eyes It ain't no suprise Sparks start a flyin' like the 4th of July She gets me so hot my heart starts a pumpin' When we get to kissin' there ain't no stoppin' When it comes to love she ain't no slacker My little darlin' is a Firecracker When I light the fuse I gotta get back quick You gotta be careful with a dynamite stick Son of a gun she's fun to handle and she packs a punch like a roman candle She's a pack of black cats in a red paper wrapper My little darlin' is a Firecracker [ Chorus ] We might not oughta take a roll in the hay Cause we'll burn the barn down a one of these days We're a match made in Heaven and it ain't no joke But I'd sure hate to see it go up in smoke We gotta go thing goin' and if feels so right She's a Firecracker She's the light of my life She goes off with a great big bang Boys I tell ya' it's a beautiful thing When she takes off you better hang on tight She's a blonde bottle rocket in the middle of the night When she makes love she's a heartattacker My little darlin' is a Firecracker [ Chorus ] Yea, we gotta good thing going and it feels so right She's a Firecracker She's the light of my life Annie Here is a link that might be useful: Firecracker...See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
