Comments (16)Guttation is a watering problem - droplets of sticky moisture appear on uninjured leaves as a result of too much soil moisture and too much humidity in the air. Moisture is not lost as quickly through evaporation in very humid air as is being absorbed by the roots, so it oozes out of plant pores. It is often seen as a sugary-looking crystal at the base of a leaf of a weeping fig and assumed to be an insect....See MoreProp Song of India
Comments (3)Well heres a site that says you can do it by cuttings.....I have this plant too, I have not cut it, but I am fairly certain you can cut it down, and root it in water or soil.....I guess if your trunk is thicker you could air layer it as well. I believe where you cut it off, should produce a new shoot. Someone jump in if I am wring. Comments (13)The plant should be potted so that the soil fills the bottom of the pot. One major reason the soil takes so long to dry is that it's "overpotted": there's about the times as much soil as a single stalk can dry out fast enough. You can't tell when a plant needs water by checking the top few inches of the pot, which can be dry while the soil in the root zone is still saturated. The best way to know when to water is to push a sharpened dowel through the soil all the way to the bottom of the pot, pull it out after a few seconds, and only water when it comes out dry to the touch (that point there is still water available inside soil particles). Then water slowly and thoroughly, especially for a chunky soil, moving the stream of water around to wet the entire surface, until 10-15% of the volume of the pot drains out. When it stops draining, prop the pot up at 45 degrees for 15 minutes or so. When you set it upright again some excess water will drain out that otherwise could drown roots, which need their soil moist (not wet) so they can get oxygen from air in the spaces between the particles. I think most of the white material is fungus, which is natural in plant soil but is much more visible in soil that stays wet all the time, but some may be mineral deposits left behind after watering 'in sips' without flushing the pot. New soil and good watering practices should solve that problem. The old soil had some chunks but is mostly broken down into fine particles that will retain water. Use a fast draining well aerated soil, not peaty fine grained stuff like Miracle Gro or other potting soils. I've seen people recommend cactus and tropical mix mixed half and half with perlite, but I've started to make Al's 5:1:1 mix with 5 parts aged pine bark fines, one part peat moss, and one part perlite....See Moreeayeary
