First Home! Interior advice needed.

Hello everybody! I now have a few ideas for the exterior of my starter home. Now I am looking towards designing and decorating the interior with a middle-of-the-road budget. First things first, all decor in the following photographs are the current owner's. All of this will be gone by the time I move in. Updating the flooring is unfortunately not in my budget with furnishing the place being my top priority (though I am open to suggestions to implement in the future!). I'm also looking forward to ridding myself of the textured ceilings. I am having trouble deciding on wood furniture finishes that complement the *very* warm flooring. I'm leaning towards a slightly rustic-chic farmhouse theme, but I'm not sure how to pair the coloring with the current wood finishes in the home--Maybe I'm overthinking it. Any advice is appreciated! If you notice anything that sticks out like a sore thumb, please let me know. Thank you all very much!

Comments (1)You can use Dirtex to clean your walls. Sanding with a power sander is fine, but you will find that it gets dusty doing it that way. I may use a pole sander for bulk sanding and then use my orbital sander on stubborn drips or areas that hand sanding just isn't cutting it. If you do power sand all the walls, then cleaning them is probably overkill. The sander is going to remove any contaminants that may affect adhesion of the new paint. Comments (20)I've attached an older thread that people discussed (at long length) the advantages of spending 'big' money on furniture. It offers a lot of different perspectives on the topic. Its a joke in my husband's family that they always buy the more expensive piece in the store. And, when they get it home, it is the most uncomfortable thing they've ever sat/laid on. They spend good good money on furniture. I think sometimes you'll just never know. I've also had this issue come up lately since we just closed on a house and need to (partially) fill it with furniture. I'm going the 'get what you want, but buy less over a long period of time' route. I love antiques, and the house really is small. So, every piece counts 'cause there isn't much room for many pieces! I've pretty much decided to spend almost 5,000 on a dining table and a secretary desk. My father is an antique dealer, and in all my life, I have never seen two pieces like these. They are just so unique. On the other hand, many pieces of furniture won't be purchased/updated for a long time. The IKEA coffee table and TV are staying. I'm not getting rugs. We are using our old dining chairs that will look positively awful with the new table. I'm making a upholstered headboard (which I've done once before) for the bed. My mother wants me to pay $100 for a table - but she always has hated most of her furniture. Why would I want to if we have the financial means? Anyways. End rant. Let us know how it goes! If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, a south facing window would be best. Place it right up in front, not a few feet away. Water from the top only. Water until it runs out the drain hole, but discard the collected water and never let it sit in that. Water as the plant needs it. Comments (11)I think your beds look great! I've been gardening extensively for 30 years and believe me, not everything works out like you plan. No matter what the label says or what you read on the interweb about a particular plant's characteristics, what they do in your own yard is up to the plant! Experience, trial and error, expensive mistakes (lol) will all teach a great deal. The experts in landscaping design will always tell you to have a PLAN and stick with it, to the extent you can. Don't go crazy in the nursery and buy a bunch of stuff that isn't part of the plan. A confession: I try to have small micro plans such as pairing the right colors together, sizes and water requirements but I completely go nuts in nurseries and continually have plants in pots waiting for a permanent home. Don't be me, lol. If you have perennials that are not in the right spot, just move them in the fall. And if your gardenia doesn't recover, just get another!
