1998? 46" 18hp murray ultra rider. no decal. no ID. well, actually mower deck is gone. it has a snowblower setup now. had it for 2yrs and still trying to get it too move. has hydro trans. sorta moves. i got a 2nd trans for $25, maybe that is clue on its state of being? put new hydro fluid in both trans. tried 1. than the other. yes, 2yrs of tinkering with it. tried adjusting hydro push/pull rod. the belt is beyond old. not even Vee shaped anymore. figured out i can remove drive belt without pushing the clutch pedal. loose? seems to me a shorter belt might help? took off drive belt. is it 94"? long? went to fleet farm as they have tons of belts. found a "murray" belt that is appx 94? or is it 95? how do you dig up the proper belt if there is no decal? uhh, you know how much crap there is inside the frame rails? quite a bit less now.

A real common traction belt is 37x61 and is closer to 95". I looked through the OEP book and didn't see a traction belt close to that in length. Cleaning the frame rails is a good idea because that rear idler complex can get bound up. Frequetly you need to replace the composite idlers too. So in the olden days, Murray Microfisch was done by year. Maybe sifting through info on partsandservice.com will get you where you need to go.

i assumed the belt length i needed was 94-95" but i could not find that in the catalog they had at store. but than we found the "murray" belt in that size on the rack so we went with it. i figured a 1" shorter belt would help. the rider does move now. better it seems. forward seemed ok but rev was weak. so i adjusted the rod 1 turn and rev is better. i still think the belt is kinda loose with the clutch released. we got it with no deck but the snowblower assy was attached. which is much more complicated than a mower deck.

You may need the anti-sputter kit Tecumseh part # Br549... Many times this is something either in the fuel system or the start of a float/ carb issue. Tho, I had a loose shroud that was chomping at the plug wire last week creating hiccups.

Something I have seen on a lot of mowers is that the aluminum casing that holds the bearings and shaft for the blades will crack, allowing the whole blade assembly to shift to one side. Get the deck off, or if you can, raise the mower up so you can get under it, and look carefully for any cracks, breaks, or stress marks on the housing. From what I have seen, a well maintained Murray, when used for what it was designed for, which is cutting grass, not bushhogging, plowing, etc., will hold up just fine. Same for Craftsman and the others. No machine will take abuse for long without giving trouble. Also follow the advice given by others on here about missing bolts and all. I was only adding what I have seen more than once. I believe sometimes the belt is too tightly adjusted, causing the break.

ok tom, we did that friend of mine had multi meter, so we tracked teh power all over the place some of the solenoids already bypassed, so we did other the key start works we have no spark at the plug trying to lift flywheel the way i know how in B&S bit it won't budge, using hammer on one side, the key looks ok, i thought they all would have been electronic ignition when i was mechanic we were fitting them to replace mech' points when plunger bush was warn and oil was coming out onto points. anyhow it is getting fuel we manged to flood it, never had OHV in my day silly idea plug and lead tucked tight behind the exhaust. so reckon if we can get ignition spark it should go. thanks hey? len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

Drive belt = Murray part # 037X87MA

Size = 1/2" x 97-1/16"

Auto parts store and other such places. Look/ask for a 4L970 belt.

Tip: Advance, NAPA etc ask for a belt that the part number ends in W if possible. For example 4L970W. They last a lot longer than regular belts.

Jack,s Small Engines has your oem belt sizing (95" x 1/2" ) as Part # 265306 for $13.34 otherwise Napa is a good local fix as suggested !

97"? thats getting longer, not shorter. how snug should belt feel with clutch released? we measured belt folded over with a tape and it was 47.5" approx so we doubled it. and found the 95" belt. a 97" is too long

As I said Jack,s has Oem belts for the Murray Ultra check their site . Otherwise Napa normally has aftermarket belts as Mule advised . Depending on the usage your belt will have some stretch from wear . I have always cross referenced to Gates but that's just my preference .

I miss Fleet Farm.... Anyways have you had a good look at the drive pulley? Years back those stack pulleys would split if my memory serves correct. Belt should feel snug. Hydros had the double idler configuration and were pretty reliable as far as maintaining tension, though you have to watch over the pulleys for wear. They seize and melt away. Brake isn't tight?
