Murray/Tecumseh 8 hp rider sputters only on bumpy terrain

I've been borrowing an older small Murray rider with an 8 hp Tecumseh until I recently fixed my Toro walkbehind w/sitting sulky thanks to Rusty, Tomplum and a few other nice folks. Anyway, It runs great on level smooth terrain in my front yard but my backyard is sort of bumpy and it's obvious that it sputters when I drive over bumpy terrain. I can reach behind me and turn the mixture screw on the bottom of the bowl in (leaner) and it seems to run a little better over bumps. However, once it cools off it won't restart unless I back the screw out (richer). I read a thread several months ago where someone had a similar problem but can't remember what I read nor can I find the posting. Any ideas? I'll get the model # if it will help but it's not at my fingertips right now. Thanks.
