Honda Black Max Mower
Comments (12)Just decided to retire my 9 year old Murray 46". On my second set of belts and 5th set of blades. Not many problems. One ignition coil replacement had been the only problem until last fall. Sprung a leak from the gas tank, I can only fill it up about 1/3 without it leaking (a new tank is only $35.00). Kind of pain filling it up twice per cutting. Then today it started stumbling and backfiring. I'd stop, play with the choke and get it smoothed out again, but within 10' it would start the stumbling again. Might only just be water in the gas. It has been super humid for awhile and without keeping the tank full....... Anywho, I'm thinking of getting that Black Max from Sams. A Honda engine is hard to beat (Kohler comes close), and Husqvarna has a real good rep. I'd prefer a 42" deck. Have very uneven land and a 42" would work a little better. The other mower I've been looking at is a Toro, but I'm leaning towards the Honda/Poulon/Husky. I've got a Black Max Generator with a 13HP Honda and it runs like a precision clock. Consumers likes Sears riders. John Deere 1st and then four craftsmans in their ratings. I don't want one because of poor service. Got two big guys to help me load a 3200psi pressure washer in my Suburban and took it to Sears for rough running and a 9 gallon tank that leaks where the top and bottom halves of the tank mate together. Two months later I get it back with a note saying everything checked out OK and they lubed the pump. Haul it back home, get the big guys again to help me get it out of th Sub. Got to fill it up with gas and the tank still leaks like a sieve. So after cleaning up a couple of gallons of spilled gas and letting it air out for a couple of hours I tried to start it---no way Jose. It wouldn't fire up at all. It ran before, just a little rough. I call Sears and it was, well, bring it back in. I said I already did that and nothing was fixed so how about sending two strong guys to pick it up this time. No way,if you don't bring it in we can't help you. Got a supervisor, same story. Sent a letter and got a form letter response--bring it in and we will fix it. That was the last thing I purchased from Sears and cancelled the maintenance contract on the generator, fridge, and frezer. So I won't buy a craftsman mower. Anyone have any experience with Toro riders? Home Depot has them and they look pretty good. They even get Tony Stewarts crew to super tune them and take a couple of laps around the parking lot. Comments (63)Must of been lucky. Bought an MTD at Ace hardware (Ace Special Edition) with a 42" cut and 16hp Tecumseh. Aside from the normal problems of your MTD of that era IE having the grille mounts break off after a few years) it's been great, and it was only replaced as it was really starting to not work well on hills, and in the last year has been a case of "What's going to break next when I mow?". A key to remember is any NEW tractor in that range is going to be light duty. If you have more an acre to mow with it, a newer, higher end, used model is a probably a better option. You'll get a lot of life out of one though if you keep it well maintained. Take care of it and there is no reason why you should not get a good, usable life of about 10-12 years. one other thing to keep in mind; the chief complaints of many people on a mower it seems is the motor. That is the most important part of a mower besides the transmission on a Hydro equipped tractor. The engine is going to what will go wrong 9 time out of 10 on a mower, and is often going to be to blame for issues with cutting (due to lack of power) and reliability....See Moredeere or craftsman?
Comments (39)I just wanted to post MY CRAFTSMAN HORROR STORY HERE....I bought a 15 1/2 horsepower 42 in cut from sears about 7 years ago,the first problem was probably the second mowing, i hit an apple mowing under an apple tree and it bent 1 of the blades lol.Next thing was the screws kept comming loose "everywhere",then the mowing belt broke,and the steering -sheeesh ,, hit a bump,touch a fence post,get it in a bind and the steering strips and keeps striping,there's not much you can do for that sucky kind of setup,and the steering rod fell off several times...next i noticed it was getting hard to crank and didn't have much power - i noticed the head gasket was leaking because the head bolts had came loose, the gasket was burnt into so i got a new 1,about a week later it stopped running,,turning the motor you could tell it didn't have any compression so i removed the head thinking it was the gasket blown again,,,but noooo wow 1 of the valve seats had popped out of the motor holding the valve open,, i used jb weld to stick it back in,,somewhere along the way the rear end went out and i replaced it,,other than that it was great! In 2004 i bought a murray 15 1/2hp O/H valve 42in cut mower ... all i do to it is add gas,change oil and mow. I do have an older murray stripped down into a riding machine,best tool a small farm can have for hauling small loads and going out in the fields....See MoreCostco Lennox Unit a Good Deal?
Comments (59)joepiccaso53, I think the primary reason is cost, I haven't seen any literature to suggest that aluminum is any more efficient than that of a copper coil: like specifying exactly the difference in efficiency from Coil A that is copper versus Coil B that is aluminum and that is the only difference from one coil to another. I do have literature that says just configuration of the equipment can have a mild impact on efficiency. But only mild meaning like 1% more or less efficient than some other configuration. So not enough to make it ecconomically viable to only do it one specific way. Like vertical only installs vs horizontal only. I have had plans to revisit and remake that video to show further what I believe to be the problem as I have cut the ends of the coils to reveal the tubes that have an uneven surface roughed up if you will with what looks like to be the edge of a file on the inside of the tubes that run thru the evaporator coil. So with all these peaks and valleys inside the tube of the coil the part that seals the tube in a multitude of places is very thin amount of metal. From that perspective it's not hard to imagine where the leaks are forming when the coil indicates leaks inside the fin pack area of the coil and not at the ends of the coil where they are typically chemically sealed in the case of all aluminum coils. This (the roughed up inner tube area) is essentially I believe to create more surface area, causes the refrigerant to tumble thru the coil absorbing more heat from return air blowing across said Evap coil. They were doing this sort of thing with copper coils prior to switching to aluminum. What difference does it make if failure is a given anyway? I mean you can argue copper failed incredibly easy and copper costs more etc. If the coil has a leak it's not going to operate efficiently anyway. Also they used aluminum back in the 80's for evaporator coils I just don't have any video to show that. Often the failure with those was the connection point from aluminum to copper was merely a compression type connection which would fail and no good way to fix it (meaning it wouldn't leak refrigerant) -- refrigerant was much cheaper then like incredibly cheap. The technology to meld the two metals together copper line set to all aluminum coil is leaps and bounds better than the 1980's variety, but the aluminum coils just fail elsewhere. If I had discovered some coil or some method to avoid failure wouldn't that be something to hang your hat on? If you look to that video I posted: I literally show you that aluminum coil failed all along the bottom of that coil. It's an upflow coil. Meaning the condensate waste water it creates is all along the bottom of that coil. Why are these clues important? I believe they show why there is failure and why there will always be failure. That condensate water the coil creates is what is doing it at least in this particular example. Refrigerant leaks can happen due to other reasons besides as I also demonstrated in the video....See Morelawnboyfanatic
