Sansevieria growing with white bird of paradise

I managed to grow a clump of sansevieria in with a giant white bird of paradise.

They have been together for about three years. A tropical and a succulent!

Not all that surprising. Sansevieria trifasciata is from tropical West Africa. If you go to Hawaii, you'll see it growing like an epiphyte along the top side of fallen trees. There are quite a few succulents that come from jungles.

I like this combination. I got all excited and was going to ask how much direct sun the Sansevieria was getting until I noticed the window panes. I have a number of Sans that I want to put in the ground and this gives me another option. Thanks for posting this.

Mealy or scale, it doesn't matter (my vote is for some sort of scale, Bois-duval maybe?), since mealy is a kind of scale and you treat them the same way. First line of defense is to wipe off all the visible pests. Next, spray with an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Keep at this for a while and that should take care of it. Be persistant, this kind of scale is insidious!

I don't know anything about seeds from cannas but I can send you some tuber from yellow with spots and some coral colored ones... How do you get seeds from them. I have never raised bird of paradise.. Just researching now. My email is sharobuck@yahoo.com if you would like to trade for tubers.

It sounds like mealy bugs and you can get rid of them by spraying with 1:1 alcohol and water in a spray bottle - spray it on the bugs and the 'coating' will melt and the bugs will die. Do it every 7 days for a month and they will be gone. Keep check on the leaves for further development of bugs, because there will still be eggs in the soil for awhile, until you break the cycle.

I just brought these inside the other day. While they were out they got sun all day. They have been adapted to grow in many conditions it looks. I did notice a lot of them in pictures from Thailand and other parts of Asia.. They are a nice combo I agree.
