What is going on with my Clotilde Soupert
Comments (6)What I found was to cut the blooms when the sepals are back but the petals aren't unfurled, then remove two layers of petals....and get wonderful, clean blooms to use in bouquets (especially Bridal bouquets.) It's good to have so many petals that they open with petals to spare....See MoreClothilde Soupert cl or Souvenir de la Malmaison cl?
Comments (11)I don't recommend CLIMBING CLOTILDE SOUPERT for Southern California. This cultivar is prone to powdery mildew in dry climates. Clotilde is a very climate specific rose, needing both humidity and heat to ward off the mildew and to fully open the tightly quartered flowers. She performs best in the Old South where the summers are sultry. A good option for you is CLIMBING LA FRANCE. The nodding pink flowers are larger and gracefully nod downwards, always a plus for a climber. The blooms are also intensely fragrant. The only disease problems this rose has is black spot, something that really isn't much of a concern in your dry Mediterranean-like climate. I think you would also be pleased with Climbing Maman Cochet or Madame Berard (tea-noisette, 1870). I've read that both A SHROPSHIRE LAD and CLIMBING SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON are poor repeaters. Flo, I'm glad your Climbing Clotilde is doing so well. When this rose is "on" she is truly breathtaking. Best wishes, Patrick Image of Madame Berard by cweathersby-NE-TX-7b/8a. Comments (9)dublinkay, I hope your 'CS' sorts herself out. I will briefly mention that my 'Mutabilis' had leaves about that color at the beginning of the year. It seemed perfectly healthy otherwise, so I wondered if the paler leaves could be because we'd had so little sunshine, so I did not repot or feed it, and when we got sunnier weather, the leaf color returned to normal. Probably not what's going on with your rose, if she is getting plenty of sun, but if she's in a location where she should have been getting sun, but the weather wasn't cooperating...? Just thought I'd mention an alternative possibility. Virginia...See MoreClotilde Soupert, so excited!
Comments (27)I've been growing it for many years and have never seen it send out a long, sprawly cane. The climbing version does. The regular version is very shrubby, densely branched, and tends to be a rounded plant here. It's tough and vigorous. I've planted it in tough spots where I thought other roses might not make it. It comes through in shade or dry, gravelly spots. Mine bloom in big flushes on and off till winter. I don't have a very good whole plant pic but you can see these two plants had a lot of blooms: Clotilde in shade on the right....See More- 5 years ago
