I agree with Esther S about hammocks! We had a very wide colourful cotton Mexican hammock which easily held two children - nothing like a narrow sailors hammock - and was great for swinging on. It wasn’t very hard wearing as the threads would snag easily and it finally rotted when stored in the shed. It also needed a very wide space to hang it up, and strong posts/walls at the right distance. But it provided lots of fun. I never used it myself as I suffer motion sickness!

My parents had 5 children and did none of these things - we had our own little flower beds (marigolds and nasturtium), but there was also a laburnum (this was the late 50s early 60s after all) which we were allowed to climb to talk to the elderly man next door. The baby was always put out in the pram under the washing line, which seemed to provide endless entertainment.

Last summer I had to cut down my Manitoba maple tree which provided a lot of shade in my back yard. Unfortunately, this created a very sunny, unshaded back yard. This summer my n18 month old grandson visited for a week so I hung a shade sail over his pool. It provided shade for the adults sitting in the gravity chairs as well!
