Got a new Hibiscus and I need some help
Comments (8)Nota, how big is your new hibiscus? Ok, I'm sure leaves are yellowing because of different environment..I KNOW this for fact. It's a good idea to check for pests, especially mites, scale and white fly. They should be easy to spot..and it never hurts to check Hibs do need 1. fresh air 2 humidity and 3. sun. \ Many of my tree hibs leaves are yellowing..it's too large for me to place in the sink or carry upstairs to the shower so the best I can do is mist. Remove yellow leave..if you leave them on and they fall in the soil this WILL attract bugs. I'm sure the leaves are yellowing becaues of the change. You want to duplicate the area in which it was shipped. If easy to carry to sink, do so once a wk.. I also really advise buying hib food at either www.stokestropical.com or www.plumeriapeople.com This food is only u sed on hibs..Since I've been using I've been able to keep a hib longer than a yr..my tree was bought in the mid-90's, so you see what I mean..Just sprinkle food on soil then water..it lasts 3 months. I divide mine in thirds so it needs feeding once a month. A little goes a long way. You apply food by size of pot..so say my 12" pot requires 2 teaspoons of food..they also give u a little measuering spoon. My hib is in south and east windows.. They only get watered when soil is dry. Misted daily. summer outdoors..this is important..you wouldn't believe the difference when they're growing outside in full sun. Even iin summer I let soil dry a bit, and after a rain shower flowers burst out. I feed my hib (one of two types of plants) yr round..Hibiscus do not go dormant, but becuase of lack of sun, etc, it does seem to slow down..in leaf growth and floweirng, but if you have sunny days they will bloom all yr..One thing about winter is, flowers do not grow as large as they do in summer when outdoors. Flowers last 1-2 days so this is normal. But w/good care there should always be flowers on a hib. Enclosed is a pic of my hib..didn't shoot the whole tree, but what you see is the middle and top. Comments (8)Bug, Not only what Don said, but you cannot be certain you actually have the tree that the label said until you fruit it and see the identifying characteristics etc. Talk to just about anyone who grows fruit, and you will hear massive mislabeling/screwup stories, even from dependable local nurseries! I have had it happen to me. All it takes is an illiterate person tying tags onto a tree, or another person not really paying attention, or kids playing tricks and switching tags for fun, another person who could care less, or another with comprimised ethics, etc etc. A local prune farmer told me that 25 years ago, he CONTRACTED with a nursery for a bunch of xyz prune trees (40 acres worth). He got the trees alright, but they were not exactly the trees he specified 100%. There was a whole swack of them which bear prunes yes, but did not have the freestone, and also grew branches much differently. He never did get the alternate prune ID'd. This could have been a case of scion wood mixup, whoever collected, stored it or used it. A lady friend of mine bought what she were told were 3 European pears locally. When they fruited, they all were Asian. labeling mixup. She doesn't want Asian pears! I once bought a Red Delicious apple from Home Depot. Turned out to be some sort of Yellow Delicious. It has since been topworked into other varieties. Expensive rootstock is all it was. Peach is usually budded in the summer heat from summer wood. I find it pretty hard to get any sort of takes from using dormant scion wood as the heat units just are not there in my climate, and peach & apricot need heat to callus to any degree....See MoreI have no clue what to do with my new Dahlia. Comments (4)Hi Carolina, Torrential rains don't sound ideal. If you keep them in a pot, it seems like it would be ideal to move them under shelter during the rains, then back out for sun. A lot of work, but possible. A lot depends on the expected size/height of the dahlia too. Your pot sounds a bit too small unless it is a smaller container dahlia (18-24 inches or so tall.) I've grown 4 ft dahlias in pots, but they were larger shrub pots each with a stake. (see the link below) They provided enough flowers and tubers, and got full height, but I think the garden dahlias of the same variety grew better overall. Could be the soil in the garden was better. Maybe your garden soil is more fertile as well or rose fertilizer is helping the dahlias along? I would think the sun needed for roses would be good for dahlias too, but I'd hope for at least 45 cm/ 18" all around and more space would be better for a larger dahlia. It can't hurt to try one there. Those are my thoughts without knowing much about Costa Rica, but it sure sounds nice! I wish you well in whatever you decide to do. They are tough enough to have grown this far, so you are on your way! Here is a link that might be useful: Growing dahlias in pots link...See MoreJade plant - toss or try to save?
Comments (19)It looks great! Is that after Bayer 3-in-1? It's what rid my plants of a microscopic mite in 2014. It looked so much like yours before treatment. It hasn't been back since. I hope yours is gone permanently too. Such a lovely jade variety....See MoreSpanishFly - (Mediterranean)
