OTR Microwave - to vent or not to vent
Comments (4)You will find little support here on GW for an OTR microwave at all, and even less support for a microwave-based vent, either to the outside or recirculating. That being said, we had an OTR microwave before the reno, and I have a new OTR microwave after our reno. I was very happy and remain very happy with this. My old micro had a recirculating vent, and the new one vents to the outside. I have not noticed any difference between the two. I'm happy with both. That being said, the space "lost" above the microwave was minimal with both set-ups. All we have is the wire and plug above the microwave. Whatever ductwork is there is not taking up any cabinet space. Good luck with your decision....See MoreOTR Microwave Flex Vent
Comments (20)Grrr. So, nobody's happy right now. The rigid elbows & straight piece they bought to replace the flex won't fit in the tight corner that was allowed. GC is not here, but his son & one other worker are. Other worker was working on the rigid and said "no way. It's not going to work, not gonna fit." I've tried really hard to not bring stuff up w/ GC in the presence of the others, or to criticize GC to the others in any way, but this time, I said "the flex is not to code" (which I did find out) "due to a potential fire hazard." I don't know what they're going to do. Worker is (I think) on the phone w/ GC right now - out of earshot....See MoreCan I use microwave ducted vent for recirculation exhaust venting?
Comments (14)I think the key word above is "appear" because to me these OTR microwave ovens look like they are not flush by two or three inches. From an earlier post: "If I can use the top vent [to] go up through the cabinet and resolve the ductwork above that cabinet, that vent will care for the stove venting and the magnatron venting, and I would not need a MW with a front-facing louver." In my view, neither this nor any other microwave oven venting scheme I'm even vaguely aware of will "care for the stove venting" because they move far too little air per unit time and the units do not overhang the burners sufficiently. Perhaps if a supplementary blower designed for higher pressure loss is used in the path taken by the this so-called ventilation to augment the flow rate, barely adequate air flow will be possible. But even then, capture area will be too small to have much effect on front burner plume capture. You can design for style and give up on having adequate ventilation, or design for adequate ventilation and give up on OTR microwave ovens. Your statement "For what it's worth, most of the cooking on our stove is boiling water or soup, scrambling eggs, or simmering an occasional kettle of sauce." suggests that you can get away with doing the former. In that case, provide manufacturer specified cooling paths for the magnetron, and ignore limitations of the mediocre or worse ventilation. And don't sear steaks on the cooktop before baking them in the oven....See MoreCan you vent an OTR microwave to a stairwell?
Comments (6)That’s not venting. That’s placing the yuck somewhere else in inside the envelope. And it’s not allowed. If you’re going to vent, it must exit the building. Straight up, through the roof, is always choice #1. If not actually venting, no need for ductwork....See MoreEmily Dey
