Here we go again!
Comments (12)Vietnam is in the hurricane path and every year we got hit for about 10+ times, mostly in the central and the north. The hurricanes always come with hard rain and landslide up north and flood in the central. Some years, the damage has been very bad, Jan, with loss of lives as well as properties! And... people are not covered by insurance because they ... don't buy insurance! That makes it the more difficult after the hurricanes! Xuan...See MoreHere we go again!
Comments (36)Hey, Claire, It sounds like your bank is as secure as it can be. There isn't much more you can do but plant and plant and plant. Roots Have worked for thousands of years and they will continue to work for thousands more. I talked with my Brother who works in Chatham last night. He said the tide was so high that several homes were in trouble. The town DPW (?) had spent the day dumping sand at several locations, trying to creat a buffer until the tide went back out. They are the same locations, or whats left of them, that lost homes in the storm of '93 (?). That was the Nor'easter that took 9 or 12, can't remember which, homes. Homes that had stood for generations. The waves, tide and currents were so strong that it caused the break in the sand bar that had protected that part of the shore from the open ocean. When that sandbar was breached, the protective buffer was lost and the homes fell into the ocean. There was much talk at the time about building sea walls and rock jetties, but in the end, enough people came to the realization that there was nothing that could be done to stop the sea. It was decided that, what was to be, would just have to be. No sense in fighting with Mother Nature...she will always win in the end. Interesting studies have been done about the reality of building rock jetties and what it does to a beach or shoreline. Nature is awesome. So keep spitting those watermelon seeds over that bank! You never have to worry about taking excess vegitation, cuttings or clippings to the dump! Lucky you...we have to pay by the pound to get rid of ours. Sooey...See MoreHere we go again! Historic winter storm for Mid Atlantic
Comments (66)Long day. Its finally stopped about 11PM. 12" here, and probably very close to that at National Airport. Still lots of wind and blowing and drifting, but the skies are now clear. Yesterday, up until about 4am it was a "warm storm" with temps around 32. Its been below 20F since about 8am here. The snow held and held and held on for longer than expected. This was definitely the storm of a lifetime, EVEN IF we had not had the 2 feet here last weekend, just the sheer conditions this storm produced, especially the whiteouts, and the near hurricane force winds along with 4-6 foot drifts, countless downed trees...etc. etc. etc. was a once in a lifetime event here in the Mid Atlantic. However, since we did have 2 feet on the ground already, it was just all the more historic. TZ7, Be safe! I hope you guys dont get it as bad as we did here, especially in terms of the winds. Many of our streets look like the photos you posted, and some were with downed traffic signals. Post more pics if you can! Suffice it to say, all of my palms, including the large trachy in the pot wrapped in plactic and xmas lights, are buried. The in ground palms were buried as of last saturday, and now they are under 3 feet. My smaller trachy unfortunately had spear pull, although that may be more attributed to the fact I left the xmas lights on it one day when we hit 49, and the palm cooked to well over 100F im sure. It somewhat dessicated after that, and has not looked good since. I think these storms just pushed it over the edge. Well see if I cant get it to come back. Ok Im going to bed. Ill post more photos tomorrow. Night all! Be safe....See MoreHere we go again: another quote
