Cast iron shower bases MUST use shower doors with a track

Just a heads up for anyone looking to purchase a shower pan/ base. We purchased the Kohler cast iron shower base for a walk-in shower (no tub).
We are now in the process of purchasing the shower doors to use with it. Well, two of the three glass companies that have given us estimates refuse to put on a shower door that does not have a track at the base. This means we cannot purchase a frameless door as planned. The reasons are (1) you cannot drill into cast iron to screw any type of support and (2) an adhesive will only temporarily secure the panel glide (the small metal piece where the doors slide through at the bottom edge of the glass). However, adhesive can be used reliably on a full track where the door slides through as the weight is distributed for the longer, full length of the track.
After Googling the subject, I found there were many more installers against the idea of using frameless doors on cast iron. Their experience was that panel glides came off a few years after installation. The one estimator of ours that said he would install a frameless door said there should not be a problem, however, he had never installed one on cast iron before. Didn’t leave us feeling very confident.
So, please take this into consideration as you go through your selection process...we only wish someone had told us, as we would have gone with something other than cast iron.
