Late season grape varieties?
Comments (10)My Summer Royal has set large clusters with large berries both here in my greenhouse and in CA near Fresno. Berries are as large as most in the stores and this is without any sprays or girdling. A major objective of Ramming's breeding program for many yrs has been to produce large fruited cultivars without the need for all the growth regulator sprays, girdling, etc. I think he has been very successful and you will see it if you can get ahold of the new cultivars. The old cultivars like Thompson and Flame, without sprays and girdling, are hardly recognizable compared to the pumped up commercial fruit in the stores. Last yr I had Flame, Summer Royal, Crimson seedless, and Glenora in my greenhouse. Flame had smaller fruit after three GA sprays than Summer Royal or Crimson with no sprays. The Flame fruit was very crisp. Glenora, a favorite Eastern seedless was far inferior in bunch size and about 50-60% fruit size. The people that tried my Flame and Glenora last yr raved about them until they tried the other two. I cut out the Flame and Glenora this past winter to give more room for Crimson and SR. The eating quality of Summer Royal was great near Fresno and in my greenhouse. Crimson is a little slower to bear so I didn't get much fruit in CA. But it is loaded with fruit this yr and the quality was great last yr in Oct and Nov. I'm sold on some of Ramming's fruit I've tried so far and hope to get more of the new cultivars. Maybe only half of what you try will work esp in cooler summer areas. But that has always been true of anything I've tried. The Fruitnut...See MoreNewbie ? Is it too late to plant grape vines?
Comments (5)Bonnie: Did a little surfing and came up with some recommendations from Dr Essie Fallahi at Parma ID. The best seedless from their trials are Alborz, Emerald, Autumn Royal, Ralli/Anahita, Jupiter, Princess, and Neptune. I'm growing both Princess and Autumn Royal. They are very good grapes but wonder about hardiness. My favorite is Summer Royal but would question it's hardiness as well. Do think Jupiter is one you should try. I haven't grown it but plan to just to see what it is like since I've heard so many good things about it. And it is probably hardy enough for you. The Fruitnut...See MoreHave you found any great deals lately?
Comments (5)Lowe's is the place to find the deals! I lucked up a few weeks ago and found entire flats of pansies for $1.50 and they weren't dead or leggy! It seemed like they just had too many. I only bought 15 flats because that was all I could fit in my car! I also picked up entire trays of 6" mums for $2.00 and a couple of large Dahlias that were $1.50 each. Upon unloading all of this at home, I realized that I had ALOT of plants! I already had numerous other flats from previous trips when I thought $5.00 a flat was a deal...Needless to say, I am still trying to finish planting all of them. My 82 year old grandmother sure is enjoying the pots lining her front staircase! I guess it is better to have too many than not enough! There is always room for just a couple more! Happy Holidays everyone! PS If you really want to get some bargains at Lowe's, be sure to always talk to the people that work there. Not necessarily the checkout people, but the ones actually working and moving plants etc. I have met the people who are in charge of marking things down at several local stores and since they know me and know I buy alot of the clearance items, I can usually get an even better price than marked just for asking! Good luck!...See MoreHave You Noticed Signs of Approaching Fall?
Comments (22)Still waiting for summer here. It's been fall like for months. Weather guessers say the greater L.A. area should heat up by the weekend so maybe we in the higher elevations will, too. The cool weather did allow me to get the porch ceilings and the front porch floor painted. Love my "haint" blue! Now to plant a few more Colorado spruces and other evergreens before it really cools off. I'm pulling the tomatoes out this morning. I give up. Next year I'll grow them like I used to - close to the west side of the house where there's a warm spot. For now it's the farmers market toms. :) We're off to Indiana again next month. I hope it's like last Sept., pleasantly warm and very little humidity. And I hope the leaves are starting to turn. Such a pretty state in autumn. Kathy, you are too funny. : )...See MoreOutsidePlaying
