Things we've been up to lately....
Comments (20)Misty is definitely not keen on her 'treads'! That picture was the funniest and may eventually end up in a frame. When we first put the booties on, we put them on her first and then put our winter coats on. I went to close the closet door and it didn't close properly. When I looked down to see what the problem was, this is what I saw: The kitchen is usually NOT neat :-) In the original house, where the kitchen table is now was the dining portion of an L shaped living room/dining room. There was a window where you can see the doorway on the right side behind the chair and the main kitchen window looking into the backyard started above where you can see the dishwasher by the stove. The addition we put on runs behind that side, so the window to the right of the table became the doorway to the pantry and the window above the dishwasher and sink is an opening looking into the living room. The original living room became the dining room after we put up the wall - and doorway to the dining room - on the left side of the table. That left a long, narrow kitchen that would have had no windows! So the window you see there now had to be knocked through the outer wall as part of the renovation. That gave it a nice wide windowsill that is perfect for plants! There are counters and cabinets on both sides of the kitchen, with the counters on the left side being short - 30" tall - and the ones on the right 36" tall. The shorter counter makes it easy for me to sit to work at the counter if need be. There are sinks on both sides too - as well as one in the pantry. And there is a fridge in both the kitchen and the pantry. The pantry has a long counter on one side with no base cabinets to make it really easy to use that surface as a work space - that's where I did all the drawing work for the course I took last winter. When I planned the kitchen, my intent was to make it as efficient and usable as possible for as long as possible given the many unknowns about where my health issues will go. So far it's worked quite well. We did think, when we moved in, 'At last, lots of storage space in the kitchen' but we could still use more space....:-) One of the odd things in the kitchen is that the floor is uneven just about where the picture starts. The old stairs to the basement went down under the cabinets at the entrance to the kitchen. The new stairs go down outside the kitchen and, when the old stairway was filled in with new joists, it became very obvious that the original house had sunk on one side because the joists would not meet on the level! So there's a funny dip in the kitchen floor......See MoreWhat we've been doing! Pictures
Comments (15)Thanks everyone! The work has been temporarily suspended until this rash clears up! I have never had a rash from poison ivy before, but I scratched a couple of mosquito bites with my dirty gloved hand and now I'm miserable. Does anyone know if there is a bad side effect to using Caladryl and Ivy Dry for an extended period? I've been applying every time it starts itching (about every hour or 2). I did use the Tecnu soap as soon as I realized that I was not invincible to poison Ivy oils. Barb, I do have a large clump of Texas Gold Columbine that will be planted near the seating area, I think. My neighbor has all of the red Turk's Cap and Lady Ferns that I care to dig out of her yard and I got a Pink TC last fall that is just growing like a weed! My butterfly ginger will also be there somewhere near the seating area. I got a plant support for it since it always gets so tall and lanky. I'm anxious to get started, but when I get hot and sweaty, the rash itches more. Thanks again for all of the nice comments! Pam...See Moreneed to cut costs, and want off cable?
Comments (22)I have had antenna tv for a long time and get around 27 stations depending on the weather. I have the converter box as well because my tv is an older 10 inch portable. Most of my signals come from towers out in the county. Having a better antenna does make the difference. I had a cheaper antenna that I thought was picking up all the stations but after my sister passed away I was given her new rabbit ears antenna and as soon as I plugged it in I received 10 more stations so I was really thrilled LOL I often scan for new stations to see if the antenna can pick up a few more. I am also fortunate because I live on the US border so can pick up Detroit and some Ohio stations, but only 2 Canadian stations which makes me laugh. CBC and PBS TV Ontario. Many shows that are on cable I can watch on the internet. I have been watching past episodes of Hoarders on A&E on my computer. I am also addicted to watching the British Show Time Team. Love watching PBS on Saturdays - all the cooking shows I need LOL Anne...See Morecutting the cable cord
Comments (20)I can't add much either. We're in the country so are very limited as far as internet service providers go. We went with Direct TV a long time ago, probably 15 years now, and have been very satisfied, although they are not proactive in upgrading their equipment on their own, so as someone pointed out, you get roped into another 2-year contract just having to upgrade your boxes, which I think stinks. Hearing other people in the city complain about various cable providers makes me very happy we have Direct TV, even though I think we could reduce our costs with a bundling package if we could do so. We currently have a Verizon broadband package for secure internet (a MiFi cellular based system). It is bundled with our cell phones and isn't all that expensive ($60/month with a 15% discount) but that is only for 30GB of data, which we have exceeded a few times a year. If we tried to go higher in data, it would be ridiculously more expensive. And although AT&T now owns Direct TV, and seems to be offering 'free data', you need to read the fine print on how the data might 'slow down' after 22 GB of data is used. Whatever that means. How do you slow down a cellular signal? AT&T isn't all that strong in our area anyway and I don't find it's very good nationwide....See MoreUser
