Teeny Master Bath - pix - need help with tile backsplash
Comments (8)Thanks LaurieC and Cat Mom. This is so helpful. We have a very small second bath (kids and guest). It is about 5x9 except near the door it is 4" wide since the chimney is in that wall. The bathroom was so bad the kids would hardly use it. We had it gutted and are about half way done getting it back together. We have been all around on a vanity. Picked out a Ronbow at first and then considered a Fairmont metro since we liked the divided drawer for the kids on the top. That Sonia is awesome but was out of our budget for this project. It turns out our contractor has cabinet maker who works for him so we are going to have something made so we can get exactly what we want and he is going to build shelves to match in the deadspace behind the door that is not useable. A copy of the the Sonia might be in order. Tile is basic porcelain (shore valadero) and we are using a mosaic glass tile (Sumi-e Sesshu Natural) for accents. Here is a question. The sink I bought is a lot deeper than yours (6 or 7 inches) but similar style. I am wondering now if I should do some sort of backsplash around the sink. We have extra tile in various sizes as we over ordered (2x2 of the shore and also an extra SQFT of the glass). The sheetrock (or what ever is called) is already in- used one type for the wet areas and something else for the areas that will not be tiled. If we want to do a back splash around the sink is the contractor going to have to change the materials? The plaster guy is coming Saturday for the non tiled areas so I guess I need to know. The GC will not be happy to hear from me on a Sat. but oh well. We are going with a 35 inch Broan Metro frameless recessed cabinet so the backspash would not be more than 6 inches maybe? I have to measure to see how low the cabinet goes. Any thoughts? I am pretty new on here so I am not sure about posting pics yet. When we did our basement I used that forum some but not to the extent I have been using this forum- way more decisions for a bathroom. I will attempt it tomorrow when I have more time. Thanks all! Comments (58)Thanks lanugget! I looked up Benjamin Moore Lancaster Whitewash on BM virtual fan deck and it said "no matches found" I guess I have to make a trip! I do love the color of your cabinets and trim..on my monitor it looks 'white' but soft..no tans or yellow under tones..?? I really think the clear glass tile would work great..I also think getting the SS back splash on your cook top is also a great idea..love it with the shelf. my own feeling is that either one of them would work very well. I also love your cabinets. They were custom made?? How were they painted, was it sprayed? who did you get to do it? I have been going back and forth with having my cabinets painted..this started over a year ago.. I posted on the decorating forum (love it there) and everyone told me not to do it (they are cherry) so I chickened out. They are pretty cabinets, but I have always felt a vintage style kitchen would work very well in this house..the age calls for it for sure, I really need a plan..lol Thanks again and let us know what you decide with the back splash..can't wait to hear..your kitchen is really beautiful and I am sure you are all smiles when your in it :) ree...See MorePlease Help me Estimate Costs for Kitchen & Bath Renovations
Comments (7)Material+Time+Labor Only you can know what you need and how much it will cost, how much time it will take you and what is your time worth, what is your overhead, and what your profit margin is. If you cannot figure out a price, this job is not for you... Because doing a job based on someone's price you will lose your pants and most likely you will end up screwing your customer, seen that happen too many times. Some would come in, and tell the customer they will beat anyone's price to get a foot in the door, and when they start the job they will run short and when that happens, they will start cut corners, ask for more money and if they don't get it, they will abandon the job and when that happens, consumer is screwed because they cannot find anyone else to finish a job started by someone else. So don't put yourself in this situation. Good luck...See MoreBacksplash and Cabinet Advice for a Tall, Galley Kitchen
Comments (8)Are you determined to paint your cabinets? As Sina says, it's expensive and if you updated your appliances and range hood, added a backsplash, new hardware, undercabinet lighting, and just declutter the cabinet tops and counter, you'd have a new kitchen! Your cabinets harmonize very well with your floor, which is your fourth wall. Your wall paint doesn't quite blend well with the current cabinets or the floor--you need something warmer to tie into the floor in any case. Here's a galley kitchen with birch cabinets in case you decide to spend your budget on updated appliances. Open shelving isn't for everyone, but in galley kitchens they can be very practical--no dueling cabinet doors but only if you have nice dishes, glassware to display and are very organized about them. Below are some other birch cabinet kitchens just for wall color and backsplash. (Plain subway in a warm color that goes with the floor and countertops are a good way to go. Tile has to work with countertop, cabinets, floor--all three or you'll get a mish mash. Take a really close look at your second photo--the closeup of the cabinet, countertop, floor. They all harmonize. Your countertop is very speckled black, so the backsplash should be simple--not too much contrast or pattern. Also add undercabinet lighting.) Here's a palette that could work with stainless hardware. Something you could do now is change out the dated hardware, which should match your appliances--nickel if you go stainless; black if you keep your black appliances. Think about a counter-depth fridge, which works better in a galley kitchen than a deeper on. In the meantime, totally declutte your coutertops and remove all those objects on top of the cabinets to let the soaring ceiling star on its own. Cost? Zero....See MoreK Sinibaldi
