Design Dilemma Bathrooms Kitchens

What do you think about concrete bathroom and kitchen?

We are about to build our new house in the countryside. We live in the island of Crete in Greece. I was thinking of having the bathroom and kitchen made of concrete and wood. What do you think?

I think it's a great idea. It gives the space a seamless look. Theres a company that I use called Senso floor. https://www.sensofloors.co.uk/walls//poured-resin-and-poured-rubber-flooring/ You can contact them and ask for samples to help you decide what colour.

Yassou Pelagia,

This would very much depend on the style of the property and your personal preference. Is the property modern and new or old and traditional?

The concrete look for kitchens works great with very minimalist interiors with white cabinetry and subtle detail.

However, the look above of the bathroom is less contemporary looking and more traditional with rounded edges.

It all really depends on the setting and the style you are looking to achieve. But based on the two above photos, I would not go for the kitchen look with the inset design detail on the doors or the windowed cupboards. That is a pressured blend of styles. The bathroom look sits comfortably and compliments the window size and style.

I hope that adds something to your thoughts.

I have a dark kitchen floor (it's Amtico vinyl "wood" planks in Priory Oak (really gorgeous, hard to believe it's not real wood), and it does show light colored debris, there's no where for it to hide. But let me tell you, with 7 kids immaculate floors are not a priority! That being said, this is a girls bathroom and there will be a lot of dusty things flying about. Yesterday I spent about an hour on the Armstrong website's "Design a Room" program and put different floors in different bathroom settings, and you could even change the cabinet and wall colors, just to get an overall idea of the effect of various colors. I was very surprised that a lovely, subtle checkerboard light gray/medium gray floor looked absolutely blah with the colors I had picked. However, a black and white checkerboard really popped. I love the checkerboard look, wanted to put it into my kitchen but I was afraid to. I only have a sunroom left, I can checkerboard that one if I don't do the girls bathroon (so this isn't my last chance). A black floor also looked great. The Flexitec flooring is already set at an angle, but the fake grout has a beige cast to it... here is the link to the Armstrong black "stone" floor. The grout lines are thinner, so there isn't a texture to the floor. That could be a good thing? I loved the black penny tile floor, it is a stunning effect. And I bet they have to work to keep it looking so fabulous. I'm now so torn about the granite-vinyl dichotomy. I hae to keep reminding myself that real tile is more of a maintenance issue in my house due to the constant shifting of my foundation. We have wall/ceilling cracks everywhere for a few months, then they disappear, then we have a huge storm, and the cracks return. But grout damage doesn't go away and gets worse over time. I guess it's a part of living in Texas. And hello Monicakm! Thank you for all of your replies so far, they've got me thinking. Thanks everyone. Brooke and ritamay- I appreciate your thoughts! I think a strip would be more subtle, less expensive and less hassle than the whole back wall. In fact, this wasnt even the glass tile that I wanted. The stuff I wanted was gorgeous, and completely sold out for a couple months. I think that all this brown might overwhelm the bath. Or I could just paint, not do any backsplash and wait. That may be the best route. I need to speak with the contractor and see what he is cabable of. If he cant do this, than it will be paint all the way. dianlo, I am so emotionally and physically exhausted from this project. You are right that I just want to be done. I DREAD going to home depot now, the sight of home/remodeling magazines makes me nauseous, and I am acclimating to the drywall dust/no kitchen/one sink (which is a luxury, actually). The only thing is that the concrete backsplash is not cheap, and I almost think that I could do something better for the money, or not at all.

Thank you flyleft, I appreciate the kind words! I was so hesistant on this purchase b/c of the cost but the free returns made me do it, nothing to lose! chickadee - that's actually the only finish it comes in, in their description it's burnished silver but the photo looked like a much more bright finish than it truly is. GREAT idea about getting extra crystals! I never would have thought of that. I was actually talking with my husband this morning on how difficult this light will be too clean!! Jeannie and Sheila - the light is from Murray Feiss's Lucia collection. I purchased it from 1stoplighting.com. They offered free returns (huge + for me) and 150% price match guarantee. I ended up saving a little over a $100 through them. The vanity is made by ambella and is the monique sink chest. you can find it on a bunch of different online sites. It hasn't arrived yet but I'll be sure to post more pics as things get installed! I really do appreciate all the feedback, this forum is fantastic!

I have to chuckle at all the folks saying that a second sink is just something extra to clean... If you have a second sink and don't like to clean it -- don't use it! Just share one of the sinks... We have a two-story house. One bathroom is downstairs, and it has only one sink. The master bathroom is en suite, and it has a long counter with dual sinks. Separate oval soaking tub, separate shower. The toilet is in it's own little room with a door, and there's also a door into the master walk-in closet. (Pocket door between the bedroom and bathroom.) The hall bathroom upstairs also has a very long counter with two sinks. The bathtub has a "shower over." The hall bath would normally "serve" whomever would be in the two extra bedrooms upstairs (kids in a "regular" family), but since we don't have kids and the two extra bedrooms are used as hubs' office and my office, he uses the hall bathroom, but he showers in the master shower.

Hello Pelagia,

I must say I love concrete and it works in both kitchens and bathrooms beautifully! Textured or smooth. Plaster too is an absolute favourite as is terrazzo and all would work together. I would like to suggest these ideas which I think compliment. The other thing of course is to consider how you can carry concrete throughout to create a seamless home. So it forms a coherent material language if you will. It doesn't have to be in large ways it could be in the form of accessories, for example.

This first image is mine and includes walls, flooring and worktop to compliment what is actually brass cabinetry with some mid century brass table/chairs and Murano glass. The idea behind it is to create a room in its own right. That is less "kitcheny" in visual appearance and more a functioning beautiful space that you could entertain in as much as you could cook in. Size being key here, of course.

You could add concrete shelving etc but I have left the scheme as is to fit the aesthetic. This is just one half of a much larger room but you get the idea.

This second I found on the web. I am not partial to mirrored cabinetry but the bathroom has lovely qualities which I think compliment my kitchen design. Some ideas for you to consider. Beautiful accessories and natural earthy elements compliment wonderfully as do a mix of materials, wood, slate and stone. Either way, enjoy what you decide. AJ
