Sochi, I really would consider it if I thought DH would ever actually leave this area. Every time I mention it or show him something I have found, he says he loves the house...being in PA near where I grew up would afford us the chance to eat at one of our favorite spots regularly (yes, ded, you know where that is!)...that it would be great to live on the water...the FLW house is amazing and he loves the way it sits on the land...It would be perfect to live in the country in France...but in reality, I don't think he would ever go along with it. Sometimes, I really get irritated, but I sort of get it and he has many ties in this area. Maybe someday, I will get my own place-some little space away from the hustle and just come back for visits! ;)

The low ceilings in many of the rooms really bother me, as does the wall to ceiling wood paneling, and it is in large part because I really dislike that yellow color wood, which is very pervasive. The wooden lounge chairs look like they belong in Pee Wee's Playhouse. The pool is not a practical shape. The house looks okay from the outside (except for the pool), but the interior is terrible, and that's were people live. He's done much better houses, although in generally I never like his color choices. I much prefer Michael Graves for color schemes.

I wonder if the basement was an improvisation "in the style of". The house was not finished until after his death. Wright straddled a line for part of the twentieth century where on one hand, he was designing houses with details that preexisted the technology to make them work effectively (especially waterproofing) but on the other hand, were really old fashioned at the time they were built in terms of modernism. This house is not much different than what he was doing 50 years earlier, in some senses, and his furniture, though modern and geometric-looking is pretty much late Victorian when it comes attitude and comfort. These houses are rigid and uncomfortable for people who don't buy into the entire Wright package. The kitchen at least is a reasonable size for Wright. The reason for all one flooring material is because there is a restricted palette of materials throughout the house and it's quite possible that even the shower is wood and brick on the interior. (Although he installed conventional cast iron bathtubs). I think the upstairs is fine for anyone who can buy into the entire Wright esthetic, but forget about trying to put normal furniture in this house. It just doesn't look right, no pun intended). The basement, to me, looks like it would be a pretty unpleasant space. (But so were many mid century non-walkout finished basements).

It’s interesting to see how people really live in a FLW home. This home is interesting to me in that it doesn’t seem to have as many built-Ins as I would normally expect to see - or maybe they’re just not showing us those areas. The St. Charles kitchen is great. Love the sofa modified to sit on the stairs! Maybe it’s the brick color, or the general expansiveness of the whole thing that makes it seem not-so-typically FLW to me. It it’s still lovely, and appears to be in excellent shape.
