Wright was an architect who masterfully integrated his homes into their surroundings, but he chose the opposite approach for the Hollyhock House. The 5,000-square-foot house rises from its hilltop location, dominating the immediate landscape in all directions.
Abstract hollyhock motifs fill the project, as seen here in cast concrete columns, pinnacles and parapets. The flower was a favorite of the home’s original owner (Pennsylvania oil heiress Aline Barnsdall) and is also planted around the building’s perimeter.

The house, conceived as part of a larger arts complex, references its theatrical ties with a water feature off its central courtyard that resembles an amphitheater.
Custom windows reinforce the indoor-outdoor connection in the home, which is one of Wright’s last projects to use leaded glass. Some windows incorporate colors that complement Barnsdall’s Japanese screens. This room faces west, and the light in it is spectacular.
