I am very happy with both my cooktop and my all clad D5 cookware, kjente. The pots cook like a dream and carry the heat beautifully. We cook a lot of pasta and I love how fast it boils water. It is a breeze to keep clean, so I maintain a sparkling cooktop all the time, unlike my days of gas. The stainless steel framing has stayed on, and there have been no chips or other issues with my JA. All in all, I am a very happy camper! Side note: My bro in law loves to cook, and is really good in the kitchen. He thinks cooktops must be gas to be most effective. He has said that he would be too concerned about shattering the glass with all his banging around in the kitchen. To each his own :-)

We are soon to have our quartz countertop and Elkay sink installed. It specifically states on the template for the sink that a 1/2 inche reveal is recommended. On reading pros and cons it seems there is a split preferene. One positive for me is that the counterspace between our stove and the sink is small and this is where we seem to do most of our cooking. With the reveal you can have a custom sized elkay cutting board sitting on the reveal giviing us about a foot more countespace and work space. I'm going to look at the sinks at Home Depot to see if there are any with reveal. Until I read the template specifications and the cutting board specifications I did not even know there was such a thing as reveal. I only hope my fabricators are as good as I was told they are.

I am a fabricator. "Brand has no bearing on chipping; it's all the same stuff." for quartz this is exactly correct. For the harder natural stones a well rounded edge provides substantial protection from chipping. You really have to whack a rounded edge to chip it. Occasionally, even in hard stones, an inclusion can pop out. If you manage to save the popped out piece the repair is simple. For other chips the repair is also relatively simple with the fillers and tools available to the fabricator AS LONG AS the customer has realistic expectations. If you follow Joe you know he spends a lot of effort making sure the customers expectations are realistic before he starts a job. For softer stones like marble and travertine chipping is a greater risk simply because the mechanical integrity of the stone is much less than granite or quartz. Repairs can also be more challenging as matching light colors or white is more difficult. A trick is to grind up a bit of the stone and use it to color a clear adhesive but you have to have a scrap piece of the stone for this to be an option. All that said rounded edges are much less prone to chipping on any material. A competent fabricator has this discussion with a customer automatically as part of the edge selection process. My 2 cents.

I am a fabricator. The best edges are the result of a combination of CNC and hand finishing. The CNC tooling is used to put the shape on the edge of the stone. Then the hand finishing is started at an 800 or 1000 grit which makes it relatively easy to avoid a wavering top line as the hand finishing is done with abrasive pads that do not remove much material. Another trick is to put a piece of masking tape along the top of the piece so the hand polisher has a clearly defined place to stop. We hand finish a lot of our jobs and I can't remember ever getting a complaint about a wavering top line. An 1/8" top radius is "OK"; meaning it won't be particularly prone to chipping vs. a sharp corner. The larger the radius the less likely the stone is to chip. We do an 1/8" top radius on our "flat" edge profile but we still put 3/8" radius on the sink cutout unless the customer specifically wants the 1/8"R there. Hope this is helpful.
