proper way of planting tree
Comments (30)During the noon hour the weather guy comes on. He is very entertaining, he shaved his head and painted it purple to support the B'more Ravens. When he has some time to kill he gives gardening advice. Although he is not very credible I will say he keeps us laughing. I would expect him to lump cabbages, petunias and maples all together. Barerooting maples in mid-May is something he might recommend. Here is a reality check. Tree growers make a considerable capital investment in cold-storage units. The only use for these buildings is to store bareroot trees and keep them dormant until shipment or planting. Working in there is dark, cold and muddy. In my area field-digging has come to a screeching halt, everything has put on several inches of growth. Field-growers don't start their summer digging schedule until after the solstice when the growth has hardened off. A tree which is barerooted when it has fully leafed out is a dead tree in a matter of minutes. Here's a novel idea, if a containerized tree has circling roots why not reject it? Why should the customer butcher up the roots of a newly purchased tree? Have the pot removed at the nursery, if it is rootbound find another tree. Rootbound trees likely have been held over from the previous year (or two). Even when they are marked down, they are no bargain. If I bought an appliance, found it defective, I would return it. Only Homer Simpson would correct the problem by kicking it around. The preoccupation with barerooting container trees is entertaining, but like our weatherman, hardly credible. Comments (5)Ok, I have been trying to grow them from seed for two years. I only had success with 1 seed the first year, and that one went dormant in the winter time (indooors) and then came back again (coincedentaly when germination began with the second years seeds). I know this was a 2nd year seedling because it was unlike the rest in that it had 3 leaves rather than 1. At the end of the fall, around December, all the seedling went dormant. What should I do? For now, I am not watering much at all as they sleep. I am hoping they are not dead, but that they are simply dormant. How much time should I wait before I begin to water again? Attached is a link of some photos that I took of the seedlings. http://www.orchidboard.com/community/group.php?&do=discuss&groupid=9&discussionid=&gmid=460#gmessage460...See MoreDang!!!! I just took an inventory of all my stored seeds!
Comments (11)Fantastic list of seeds! I think it is just great that you have focused your life on nature at such a young age. I too would love to have 10 (maybe 5) acres someday to plant a wonderland of natives plants, and am already doing that on 1.25 acres. Difference is, my interest didn't come into sharp focus until age 45. :) There are quite a few seeds on this list I am interested in, and I checked your want list and I have a few on that list. Maybe we can do a trade this fall? Just a note - on your want list is Cynanchum louiseae - this is an extremely invasive non-native vine that is becoming a serious problem in the Northeast US. And it has the additional problem that Monarch butterflies will "sense" it is in the Milkweed family, lay eggs on it, and then it will kill the caterpillars because it is toxic to Monarch larvae....See MoreProper Installation for FL washer - how do I ensure this?
Comments (6)If the washer is adjacent to an exterior wall you'll have less chances of vibration than you would if the washer is against an interior wall. That's because exterior walls are usually more rigid than interior walls because they have to support the weight of the roof and floors. Locating the washer in a corner with two exterior walls is even better. If your house is still in the framing stage, ask the contractor to provide extra bracing in the floor to ensure that it's as rigid as possible. If it's too late for that, and you later find you're having a vibration problem, the floor can be strengthened by laying a 3/4" thick piece of plywood, large enough to support the washer on the floor, and screw it into the floor joists with long screws at 6"-9" intervals. That will provide you with a very rigid floor under the washer. If you're even moderately handy, I recommend installing the washer yourself, in exact accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. It's not difficult, just a bit tedious employing the "trial and error" method of ensuring that you've got the leveling feet adjusted properly. You're likely to spend as much time as necessary to get it right, a professional installer may not want to spend the time it takes to get the machine optimally level and flat on the floor. It is vital that the machine be properly leveled and the weight of the machine is evenly distributed to all four feet. If you're unwilling or unable to do the installation yourself, be sure to get a guarantee of satisfaction from whomever you engage to do the installation. If possible, don't pay for the installation until after the machine is installed and you've ascertained that vibration isn't a problem. One other thing, be sure to specify that the shipping struts (or bolts, as the case may be) are not removed from the washer until after the machine is moved up your stairs. Bouncing up a stair on a dolly with the struts (or bolts) removed, will cause damage to the suspension. Delivery people always want to remove the struts while the washer is still on the truck. Don't let them, and insist that they leave the struts with you, so they can be reinstalled if you ever need to move the machine....See Morenicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis
