Comments (47)Kim, you are ahead of me, but you may be q 100 miles south of me also, so spring may hit you a little sooner. 32 tubs are a lot of tubs to fill, and of course you know how heavy they can get. Some of my tubs have onions in them, and the last time I checked they were doing well, but they are not bulbing onions. I have been using my perennial a lot, try to get Madge use to using them. I even used some winter onions, jalapenos and sweet potatoes in kraut and weiners at lunch, it sounds sickening, but it was good. I did not put the sweet potato slices in till everything else was about done. The sweet potatoes were still crunchy. I used the Red Wine Velvet sweet potatoes, which are pretty sweet. Madge is very kind to me, I like to experiment with everything I do. I have been out raking leaves to put on the garden, I wish they were shredded so they would stay in place better....See MoreJanuary Week 3 , 2024
Comments (37)Finally check a few things in the garden. Mostly just the hoop house and the hinged hoop. The broccoli in the hinged hoop had that very, very thick frost cloth on it. (It is one that Tim gave me. I would like to have more of it, but I've never seen anything like it. I can't remember where Dawn said she purchased her frost cloths. Did anyone else get any from Tim at the SF the year after Dawn passed?) ANYWAY, the broccoli is damaged. It was starting to make little heads and they are goners, although the plants are still alive. I doubt they'll make anything now that the heads froze. The stuff in the hoop house is mostly gone and/or damaged. I put an extra layer of covering on it even though it was inside the hoop house. The lettuce and arugula are gone. The cabbage looks really bad, but it wasn't great to start with. The kale is standing strong. The spinach was in a container and uncovered and is damaged. I'll probably just pull it all except the kale and spinach and start fresh. Now, just gotta find time to start seed. And a place to put them. I might just try to start them later than normal, like around March 1 when the remodel should be complete and try to put them out mid April. We'll see how it works. Just depends on the year we have and how quickly we heat up this summer....See MoreROSES in UK/Europe.. 2024.. Spring/Summer
Comments (987)@peter straw I think everyone has hit the nail on the head re daylight hours and catch up. Last year I was about one to two months behind everyone elses blooms, but then everything exploded into life. The cold and wet Spring will not have helped either. Like I said earlier on, now, I manage my patience (and expectations). I know I will not get a rose as early as @Nollie in Spain Zone9 , but when they come they are all in a rush to bloom. Makes deadheading an immediate and mammoth task, as everything comes at once. But, my advice is firstly NEVER to doubt your ability - roses are much tougher and adaptable than you think. Just relax and enjoy - the deadheading will come soon enought. Also as everyone elses blooms come before us, then you get the luxury of planning for next year based on everyone elses choices and tribulations. @Marlorena in England . Glad to be of service re new tulips - though I must say that my hands down favourite is Cairo. When the sun hits it the flowers just blaze with light. Red Dress is pretty in a pot, but is hopeless on repeating (I think they are part of the 'Crown' Tulip grouping). Next year I am going to splurge on Darwins and then get them out into the garden for naturalising....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 3/24/2024
Comments (26)Jojo - I am sure you are experimenting this week and I hope you find some successful foods. I will say, oatmeal is the first thing that gets either skipped for breakfast or modified a great deal when people first start wearing a glucose monitor. It is known for its sudden glucose spike. Accompany that with two pieces of toast and the sudden spike followed by a sharp fall could certainly have you feeling that way. I do best with fat, fiber and protein for breakfast, but sometimes I will have oatmeal. But only 1/3 cup mixed with 2 T chia seeds and some cinnamon and walnuts, along with breakfast chicken sausage for protein. I'm trying very hard to minimize my processed food, and it is so hard for me. I really do enjoy eating out and snacking. I need to cook more, but it takes so long :) And I can never figure out what to make. Today I thought I was doing well, but I still had a Papa Steve's Bar for breakfast and Masa chips with my avocado. Now, technically papa steve's has no junk and the Masa chips are made with beef tallow instead of seed oils, but they are still processed in some manner. I will keep trying to eat more whole foods! I am very good with fruit and nuts, so there's that :) I have been walking this week and got in several hours of pickleball and one strength training workout, so that part is going well. The podcast I listened to today said 20 minutes 3 times a week for strength training, and after that the returns start to diminish. I can do that - 20 minutes is nothing in my day. I am going to try harder to be more consistent with that....See Moremazerolm_3a
