Does anyone know of a bug / insect that defoliates bears breeches?

For the last few years something has been defoliating my bears breeches, along with peonies and false indigo. The first year it happened, I thougth the deer had become unusally hungry and had started to eat just about anything, but last year I put a game camera focused on the bears breeches and it was not the deer. I have looked at all three of the plant types and have not found any insects, so I am completely puzzled. They start to eat all the leaves off the bears breeches late July / early August. I would really like to get ahead of this for the upcoming season. I am in northern Maryland.
