Fall Update on 1st year No Spray Garden
Comments (30)JBCarr, I could not agree with you more about monoculture and especially with roses. I'm learning more about gardening than about roses although they will always be my first love. They shine much more when planted amoung other plants rather than with other roses. As I change my gardening habits, I'm keeping this in mind and replacing these monocultures with different shrubs. Just my opinion on gardening, no judgment call. I'm reminded of the story of Mrs. Wilmont's Ghost. Seems Mrs. Ellen (?) Wilmont, a gardener of some repute, was asked by many to come evaluate their gardens. Her assessment was almost always, not enough contrast, not enough diversity. A few weeks after her visit, the gardener noticed a number of sea hollies (a course looking, prickly perennial) sprouting in the bare spots in their garden. Mrs. Wilmont often carried seeds of this plant in her pocket to "help with the contrast and diversity." Len511, I wish my Felicia was doing well. She is bare caned; not pretty at all. Good luck! I hope yours continues to do well. And my Felicia is prone to sending up those long canes, but is too broad to be a climber. Jeri, I suspect weather is the greatest most uncontrollable factor in any garden. We've had years with drought but this year we've had above average rainfall, except for a dry August. Now, with all the hurricanes, our weather has turned wet again. Still, there is very little mildew compared to the last two years. I think most of the roses are going through "withdrawal" from chemical dependency. Some I know will never recover. I can only wait and see. Barbara...See More1st heavy fall saeson rain. It's here !!
Comments (25)I'm out doing damage control now. My VERY tall buddleia bushes (trees, really) have toppled over. Should I just give them a hard prune now? I feel bad for the butterflies... as these were blooming. My ceanothus tree has also toppled, and it's also blooming. SIGH. Don't know whether I should prune, or try to straighten it up with a post?? Also, I'm eating my words now about my drains comment a few posts up.... I spent the day out in the pouring rain with the plumber, snaking the drains. Turns out that roots have grown in them, and they have to be replaced. Well, I guess I get to re-landscape my front yard now, LOL. We bought a pump, and got rid of the "lake" that way, in the pouring rain. Where is our Indian Summer?? Oh, and we had a little earthquake last night. Always crazy stuff in October, it seems. Well, at least we don't have hurricanes/tornadoes!...See MoreFall Planting Season Begins July 1st
Comments (4)I cannot plant a lot of the real cool-season stuff like spinach until fall because we're often still in the 100s here in early September. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for a normal summer with only normal summer hot temps and with normal rainfall instead of last year's insanely hot and dry weather. It would be nice to be able to keep the garden going all summer long with succession plantings without having to worry about a really sky-high water bill. Usually I go through my seeds about now to make sure that if there is anything I need for fall/winter, I have time to get it. Down here they usually start yanking seed racks out of some stores in June as if the planting season has ended. That drives me crazy! Territorial Seed Company does a better job than most seed companies of providing seeds and plants for fall and winter gardening. They even have a Fall/Winter Garden catalog that you can request at the website. I'll link their website below. They also have fall/winter gardening guides, seed of fall and winter cover crops, etc. Dawn Here is a link that might be useful: Fall Gardening/Territorial Seed Company...See MoreCelebrating March & soon to be '1st Day of Spring!' Comments (17)Oh PM, that is the most beautiful cabinet from windows! And it would fit my style so well! TFS! I'll show DH but I know what he'll say & I know that I'm thinking the same thing, too...WHERE WOULD YOU PUT IT??? (LOL!) I've used up all my space (& more) so I would have to get rid of something...& it wouldn't fit in DR or LR ...so probably the porch area (& I already have the corner door cabinet, Hoosier cabinet & hanging wall shelf out there! ;-) Thanks for that idea! ;-) I don't know if my DH would trade places for awhile...but I know your Mr. O would hate it here in Winter...the golf courses just opened ...tho they are soggy & cold! punk ...I don't know much about the shuttle loom or weaving...but I saw this at one of my fave consignment shops & it was $10 ...I knew the middle was called a bobbin cause I have some of those w/threads on them in a basket. First of all, I told myself I didn't need it...& then a few wks later I went bk & it was still there & 30% off (or something like that)...so I knew I needed it! :-0 Sounds like jane did some of this art, so hopefully she'll share some expertise on this pc! Thanks, Holiday-ers for your comments! Jeanne S. punk...I found this pic on Photobucket......See Moreckerr007
