Dark Island or dark perimeter counter tops
Comments (7)I, too, am pondering the same! Soapstone and marble are on my wish list. We have maple cabinets with a cherry stain, & I wonder if the soapstone would be too dark on the perimeter, yet that is where it would work best functionally, i.e., wouldn't have to worry about staining, can put hot items directly on counter, etc. Yet would it be too dark? Perhaps a lot of under cabinet lighting would help, along with a light backsplash. A designer friend told me soapstone is too dark for my space; would work fine if I had white cabinets (which I can't justify since our current ones are in great shape). Yet I still pine for soapstone; I want to find a place for it (right now I have a soapstone spoon rest :). The soapstone on just the island could work, then marble or quartzite on the perimeter. I just don't know, and today I have soapstone samples on the counters trying to imagine it. I may look for a dark sheet or tablecloth to put on the counters to try and get a better feel for the look. I love the brown marbles, but I've read that etching is more noticeable with darker marbles, so something to consider. For now, I am hunting for a remnant to put on the small island; then I could figure out the perimeters later. Not ideal, but that would be a good "test" for us on the marble/soapstone. If it didn't work, we would repurpose it for vanity counters. With white cabinets, you have more options. I will be following this thread with much interest! Comments (13)Search for some of @KarinMT's posts - she is a geologist and has written quite a bit about quartzites vs. marbles and Super White in particular. Here is one of her published articles " What about Super White? Super White is one of the stones that is frequently caught in the quartzite vs. marble mystery. Most commonly, Super White is dolomitic marble. That means it won’t scratch glass and it will etch with acids. Some Super White has minor amounts of quartz mixed in with the marble. But the rock is still marble and will act like marble. When doing the glass test with Super White, be sure to test a few different areas to get a sense for the overall rock. Is it all the same? Or are there some parts that are harder or softer?" Be absolutely sure to test several areas of the slab(s) in question and understand you have a marble....See MoreBar Island cut to counter height needs new counter
Comments (9)Thanks for input. Removing backsplash not an option & of course decisions are easier when replacing all! But, sounds like your idea is to tie new counter in to backsplash color. The backsplash & granite do look more color complementary to each other when seen in person! The granite background isn’t as white as appears & is warmer. It’s Santa Cecilia granite but the lightest example we’ve ever seen of it....See MoreOrienting granite slabs with veins for island and perimeter counters
Comments (16)Thank you, @cpartist. That is just what I needed to be reminded of - to choose one center, focal point and not to have multiple ones competing with each other. I like how you phrase it as "quieter." I am going to make the drive to the fabricator tomorrow and work on balancing pieces so they are in harmony, like you achieved. @Jeff Grenz - Excellent advice and I completely agree. We chose these slabs without pressure and knowing the risks. I went to every slab yard in our area back in November of last year, "just to look" and get a sense of what was out there. (It's a bit like saying you will go to the animal shelter "just to look" - ha! Get ready to fall in love with something.) Currently, if one is not doing a white or grey toned kitchen, the slab selections are less abundant and so I wanted to research what I could expect for options. These slabs found me and spoke to me and while I was deciding whether or not to take the leap (and take on some risk securing them so early), two other couples who came in while I was standing there wanted to buy them! They are definitely unique and nothing else out there was like them. The slab yard is a highly respected one and the sales person was one of the most professional vendors I have come across in the whole build. This luckily wasn't a high pressure sales job, just pressure applied by yours truly to want to get something special that I dearly loved. I did check on the amount needed for the layout of our kitchen before committing. They were gracious enough to hold the slabs for me since November. You are spot on, though, that anyone looking should be ready with all the information they need to make an informed decision and to have their antennae up for anything that feels like high pressure tactics....See Morechispa
