The vast majority of waste handling services provide their own containers. Check with them as to what models are acceptable if they do not provide it.

Get one that looks like this.

I personally prefer the Toter. I have had one for over 12 years. I replaced the lid from Toter about 2yrs ago but beyond that no problems at all.

Thank you all! We definitely have to provide our own cans, and given the specifics of our storage closet, prefer to anyway. We have to pay for pickup, but on the bright side, they will come up to our house and take the cans out of the closet! Hooray for that.

Make the closet large enough to park two suburbans inside, have hot & cold water supplies and a drain run to the space, provide plenty of electrical outlets, heat and air condition the space, have a big window to the view, and supply a ceiling fan.

Now, if you don't know what to do with the space, the next home owner will because they will probably park the cans outside.

I think outdoor closets for trash cans are a nuisance unless one lives where skunks and raccoons are a serious problem with your trash. They get nasty inside when the cans overflow, and they will.

Just remember, whatever brand of trash can you buy, and no matter how sturdy, your trash pickup guys will manage to tear the h#ll out of them, and will never put them back where they found them.

homepro01, do you have the 32 gallon size? It is not at all clear that the measurements given are of the widest part of the barrel (top), rather than the base.

I have the 48 gallon and 64gallon units. I use the 48gallon for leaves. Why do you need the sizes of the smallest part of the cans? You would want to build to the largest size.

Cool. The top is the widest. It tapers a little towards the bottom but not by a large amount.

I had no idea people bought their own garbage wheely bins. Our city distributed ones much like the Toter.

...and therein lies the problem. That 35g can you are building a closet for is tiny by trash can standards. If your town switches over to curb side pickup they will require you to use a can they issue, which around here would be 95g's.

Well, if hell freezes over, we'll figure it out.
