Tub spout/shower valve problems....help!
Comments (0)[Cross-posted from Plumbing in case anyone over here with recent bathroom renovation experience has any insight!] I'm wondering if anyone might be able to offer some ideas or advice on an issue we're having--thanks! We had a 15-year-old Delta shower/tub setup with a leak. At the time DH thought it was an issue with the valve and tried to fix it...and wound up breaking it by turning it too hard. So we had a plumber come out and install a new valve....but the leak persists. Pretty sure it's the spout diverter at this point. So question #1: we have a universal plastic Delta adapter. The new valve is Kohler (pressure-balanced temp only) and I plan to buy the Kohler trim set that includes the diverter spout. The options are slip-fit or 1/2" NPT. Neither, I assume, is compatible with the Delta universal; can I simply take the plastic piece off and use a slip-fit (or cut off the threading and put a slip-fit over the plastic) or do I need to replace the entire pipe? There seems to be a short copper pipe underneath. AND....we've developed a new problem now! When we run the tub, we now hear gurgling sounds from the showerhead (a handheld showerhead, so there are multiple connections---some of which seem to leak even when we're just running the tub). When we turn the tub off, the gurgling continues intermittently, and water runs out of the spout each time it gurgles. Is this also related to a bad diverter in some way? It didn't happen before we had the new valve installed, so I want to be sure it's not a problem with the valve or the installation before we tile everything back in. Any help would be much appreciated---thanks!...See MoreHow I became a Grohe convert (and beware the Delta Lahara)
Comments (7)I'm glad the Delta Lahara worked for you, sas95 - I may have just gotten a lemon, and the manufacturing standards may have gone down since you bought it, hence my warning. The lovely stainless Delta pull out convertable spray/normal in my kitchen that's been in for 8 years still works great and has all metal compression fittings. Antss, the list on the Delta was $260, not to be confused with a Glacier Bay-type faucet; I paid about $150 for it on Amazon. The Grohe replacement was $170 in the DC area. Comparable price, big difference in quality. Another victim of JIT mfg to the lowest bidder-of-the-moment trend of US corps, IMO - but I'll avoid the political soapbox on that one (I'd be up on it all night!) and say I wasnt trying to slam Deltas, per se, just warn about the potential current lemons in the line based on my most recent experience with them and offer another option for those looking for top value at mid price in a design that non-plumbers can install flawlessly....See MoreTub/shower valve and diverter problems--help!
Comments (6)Thanks! The problem leak is from the spout while the water is off, which we initially thought was valve-related, but doesn't seem to be now that the new valve is in and it hasn't stopped. It's a slow but steady drip. We do also have problems with a steady but small stream of water from the spout while the shower is running (and with a small stream of water from the shower while it's not supposed to be running) but those stop when the water is off, so I'm less concerned about them....See MoreReason GC put in Delta valves when we specified Kohler Trim???
Comments (20)Yes, he's lying. Agree with above. You have been fed straight-up b.s. and now you have to be a hard @ss (stand your ground) and demand it gets done right. Who eats the extra labor is their tough problem, so stop trying to stand in their shoes. They have cast doubt in you (lying, frankly) and that is leading you down the path of "find solutions and compromise" for b.s. reasons. Force them to solve the problem that they created for themselves. Know a lawyer? Let them draft a friendly letter for you. "We wish to rectify this situation in a friendly manner...." Sincerely....Esquire. The ONLY reason to now leave it is would be that the owner wants to acquiesce and leave it - that's up to the owner. But you get $$$ back for that! I think the contractors are overtly taking advantage of your unfamiliarity with this process. Doing the work first, and they saying "by the way...??!!" B.S.!!! And if this happens to have a male/female dynamic, it can be all the more true, most unfortunately. Whatever the reason for the switch, this isn't the first time they tried it. That's for sure. Contractors are very well aware of the importance of fixture selection. Don't fall for the "there's no difference". I see plumbers that try to do this for toilets and tub drains too many times. You buy a Kohler tub and they try to install an old fashioned drain into it before anybody thinks about it - just so they can say "you should have told me". More b.s.
