Marble cutting boards from countertop - yea or nay?
Comments (19)I spill espresso and coffee grounds on my Carrara all the time without any staining, etching, etc. Marble does not stain easily as previously mentioned if it is properly sealed. Etching, sure. Staining, no. I do have one very, very faint stain under my espresso machine when my DB and his wife tried to use the machine when I wasn't home. They didn't really know how to work the machine and made a mess. I thought I cleaned it all up until 8-9 days later when DH moved the heavy unit a bit and I saw a huge puddle of dried espresso. Apparently they did some damage to the machine and it had a slow, unnoticeable leak--underneath. And btw, I knew you weren't really planning to use the board for cutting. ;)...See MoreTrash compactor - yea or nay?
Comments (23)Respectfully, anyone who has not HAD ONE really doesn't know. THEY ARE AMAZING! As the man that has to take out the trash nearly every day previous to having one I will never go without one again! Also great for condos or beach areas where space is a premium. I have had 12" KitchenAid for about 8 years and it is awesome, LOVE IT!. I literally only had to take it out ONCE EVERY 2 WEEKS. I used a model with 'Solid Pack' and would engage it at night to compact to the maximum. (yes it gets heavy but so what if you only take it out occasionally, take it out once a week if it gets to cumbersome). It didn't ever smell. I would avoid putting fish heads, rotten fruit/veg in there if I new it would be leaving it in for another week. I opt instead to use the Garbage Disposal for those things. Also putting a paper grocery bag or newspaper in before a compact helps absorb and cut down on mess. I buy plastic heavy duty bags in bulk with tabs to hold bag up. I also use a separate Bin for Recyclables as I don't use many cans or bottles. Again, love, love, love it. I have very high end kitchen and feel it definitely adds to value. If we sell new owner can easily replace with Ikea pullout trash....See MoreCream Veranda, yea or nay?
Comments (46)@bayarea_girl_z10a_ca Thank you for adding those photos and the head's up about mildew. My first blooms looked similar to your first photo and I thought I received the wrong rose. A few days ago, all of a sudden, it had a bloom with peach/light orange color and many more petals that I looked to see if maybe there were two plants in the same pot (no, just one plant). I guess it's just the difference in temperatures because we just had a break from the constant 100F. Photo is from May 29, 2023. I didn't take a photo of the more petal packed bloom with vibrant color because I thought it was so ugly that I immediately pulled it off the plant (the petals developed wrong). Mine is still young; own root, bought this year as 2 quart pot. Coincidentally, just earlier today I repotted it into a 2 gallon pot. I came across this thread because I was trying to figure out its growth habit to know where to place it. I love the bloom when it's light pink and shows all the stamens. If it's willing to give me lots of those, I'll be happy, even if that's not the look I bought it for. Though I sure do wish it had more fragrance and the blooms lasted longer. Comments (12)In the garden books I own written in the 1920's, there are many laments on how hard it has suddenly become to find horse manure. In the garden books I own written in the 1950's there are many laments on how hard it has suddenly become to find someone who knows how to trim a hedge. So because of that, the hedging plants that require frequent trimming to maintain their shape, namely hemlock and privet, fell out of favor. So to my mind, the big issue with a privet hedge, aside from the fact that I, personally, don't like privet, is that it should be clipped about 3 times a year. If you are OK with that level of maintenance, go for it. When we first bought this house, it had a hemlock hedge bordering the deck. I pruned it about twice a year for a few years, then had my DH take care of it. I told him he could either trim it with hedge shears, or trim it with a chainsaw. He chose the chainsaw....See Morejust_terrilynn
