peegee hydrangea tree close to sidewalk
Comments (7)Sorry to hear that, Amy. The hydrangea roots should not be "too deep". Many will be surface roots located in the top 4-6" and others may go down 1 foot or so (it just depends how old the shrub is). Sounds like the plant was stuck for a long time in the pot at the nursery. I have had the same trouble but not with a hydrangea; it was some other type of bush. When I extracted it from the ground, it looked bad all right. I have lots of clay here but when I dig the hole, I mix in 1/2 or more of compost (or manure), some expanded shale, bone meal and whatever is appropriate/suggested for soils in your area. The shrubs are then planted no higher than 1" above the surrounding soil. Next time you plant another hydrangea, I suggested amending a lot with compost because of all the things out there, compost is near the top in terms of absorbing water and slowly releasing it. What I would evaluate is (a) how come you found areas where the soil was wet? what caused that? can it be prevented/corrected? (b) make a habit of cutting the roots of all newly planted shrubs to break the circling tendency that they develop in pots. I cut vertical lines about every 2". Do not let this get you down. Evaluate what went wrong, learn what works for you and try again. You do not even have to try with a hydrangea next. Mums are out for sale so check them out! Ha! Good luck! Comments (71)I, too, have been reading about your family, your plans, and your challenges, and, like everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing your After pics! I am no decorator myself. I have been doing the same thing you are--reading magazines, library books, and mostly online to figure things out. There are quizzes you can take, too, that might help you define your style. Once you know what you want, keep reminding yourself what that is, and don't let yourself wander too much from the plan. Stick to your guns! We just rebuilt our home after a total loss due to a fire and have not had much left for furnishings. We have had to buy just a few brand new things. Mostly, though, we've been having lots of fun acquiring nice things at bargain prices by searching for, bargaining for, and buying well-built items from Craigslist, Goodwill, Salvation Army thrift stores, auctions, antique stores, estate sales, yard sales, and junk stores. We inspect things thoroughly to see what they're made of and how they're made, and to see if we can refinish or paint them. I think we're ending up with better things than we could get if we bought all new stuff from a furniture store. (And it's sort of like a treasure hunt, lol.). Good luck!! I'm definitely going to be watching for your posts!...See Morehelp finishing master bedroom
Comments (35)I wanted to pop back on for anyone who may have been following this thread that may be interested in any progress I’ve made. I didn’t mean to go so silent, things in our world just got a little hectic and this project got pushed down the list. No major changes, but a couple of updates. I did add some gallery frames at eye level in the entry hall. I really love them (mainly because of the photos I chose), and stop to stare at them often! I rehomed some of our throw pillows to the living room and added this blue velvet one from Pottery Barn. That actually reduced the number of “extra” pillows on the bed by three, which made my husband quite happy! The biggest thing is probably this bench I found, which we are really enjoying! My husband used to sit on the foot of the bed in the morning to put his socks on, typically while I’m still in bed. We have a SleepNumber, so it would throw off the distribution and disrupt my sleep. This way, the bench adds a pop to the room and is also functional. :) I haven’t addressed the mirror or “too high” wall hanging yet. I do have something sentimental coming that will hang above our bed. Would love to eventually change out our nightstands... but we’re in the process of growing our family and I don’t want to swap inexpensive for inexpensive, so I think I will wait on those so that I can really invest in them. I also haven’t decided if we will add a dresser or not. For now I’m kind of thinking no as we don’t need the storage, and if we eventually have a bassinet in our room it may begin to feel crowded. Will revisit that later! I don’t know that this is all that important to anyone, but everyone was so good to reply to my initial post, so I felt I owed an update!...See MoreHelp! Comments (31)I love jan’s drawings but her posts remind me why designers get politely fired! I myself have let go two in my life, the first one being the first time I ever tried to use a designer without knowing it was possible one might not listen to a client, the other was one whom I brought in to stage a home before selling it, because I knew my own room use, layouts and decor choices were not the market. I paid the consultation fee but hired someone else who came up with a different plan with my existing furniture. The house sold fo $35k over asking, one day on the market. I’m sure Jan amd others have many stories to tell about how happy they were to say goodbye early to a client. These things go both ways for sure. As for advice given on Houzz, I certainly don‘t expect the OP here to take my suggestions, and it is easy to imagine she and her husband laughing uproariously over how out of their world my ideas are. In the end she and her husband might decide to go with every single thing jan has said it is what jan wants to do. But other designers, creatives and the owners themselves standing in that room can and would come up with other successful plans for a delightful functional space Wish it were my house to decorate because i can see where I would have a lot of fun doing it and having others share What I created. I think Houzz forums are great for all the people who offer their ideas so the homeowners who live in them have the best possible shot at coming up with a great space for their needs....See Moremjlb
