Help with ideas for dining room ceiling
Comments (7)kaydles, That would be great to see some photos of your home. I would love to see how you are bringing in French touches. luckymom23, I agree also about that the wood beams would look good with the wood floor. I guess my biggest concern is how fancy can I go with the white painted crown molding and the trim around the arched doorways into the dining room while using stained beams? The trim salesman showed me some beauiful fancy crown samples and I would love to put them up. One is wide, with a small carved pattern at the bottom edge and the top edge. The middle part is a nice plain curve. I think I could go with this one without it looking too fancy. There is another crown that is fully carved that is beautiful. My dining room furniture is very fancy mahagony Chippendale style from Thomasville. It is not French or country at all so I may put printed fabric covers on the chair tops to try to tone it down a little. I guess I am wavering between going with some fancy carved moldings but at the same time using the stained beams in the middle of the ceiling. Any feedback or advice is appreciated. Comments (5)Agree with Annie about not letting labels dictate how you use your rooms/house. Our current house has a living room, dining room, family room and one more large living space. We use the living room in the front as the TV room, the central open family room is more formal, the dining room as labeled, and the extra living space is the kids playroom with another TV and their desks/computers/storage. There used to be just a hallway opening between the playroom and the central family room. I had a contractor add a door, so that we don't have to worry about keeping it perfectly neat and it is nice being able to close the door when there are several kids playing a noisy game. I love not having the main TV in the central open family room. Much nicer being in the kitchen without having to put up with sports shows....See MoreAsymmetrical LR: Please help BEFORE we buy furniture! Photos & details
Comments (31)I'm back and am sorry to have deserted this post after receiving such great feedback. Our family was out of town for a bit, and then we had school prep for kids, etc. I finally managed to rearrange furniture and have posted some photos here with my comments below them. As always, I *really* appreciate feedback. I'm ready for new furniture so I can post "after" photos! Thanks in advance. Current sofa - centered in front of fireplace. I DO love the symmetry this provides. It's a little more cramped near the entry than I'd like (see next photo), but might be okay. Still not sure how I would configure other furniture though. Space between centered sofa and corner as you walk in through foyer. Disregard furniture in the background. :) View of entry from great room. Sofa in the window. Nice to use that space, but I'm not a fan. It exacerbates the asymmetrical shape of the room, blocks the view, and isn't very functional. Centered sofa and chair and a half in front of window. The chair is too close to TV here, but this configuration might work with smaller, cleaner-lined furniture. Or possibly a sectional with short section in front of the window? From foyer. Sofa is pulled back as far as I would want without making the walkway behind it too narrow (see previous photos). View of chair on short wall with centered sofa. Note: I can't have two chairs opposing each other, because even if this chair was moved all the way to the edge of the wall behind it, the opposite chair near window sit right next to the TV corner....See Moreasymmetrical windows in a square dining room
Comments (14)It would be helpful to see the room layout with dimensions, but based on the pictures, it looks like the table should go in the other direction being long wise in front of the windows. Find another spot for the buffet. Romans would work well for your windows. If you prefer drapes, have the rod go almost up to the crown. Find finials that are flat so that you can have an end cap on side nearest the wall and it won't be noticeable....See More- 5 years ago
