The only time I'd worry about sealing them is before the get grouted. After that, it's not really an issue. But if you like, the same sealers used for sealing grout would be what you want to use-- Aquamix Sealers Choice Gold, Miracle 511 Impregnator, or Stone Tech Impregnator pro. As for how often, it should be many years in between coats of sealer for something like crackle glaze tile.

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. lmao. what Jan said! Although, I had to help out my guys who did my herringbone wood floor. it's the starting point where everyone gets messed up. after that, it's simple. Look up how to properly start a herringbone layout and read it. you need to use a speed square at the end of your tile in order to get the proper middle starting point. much easier to illustrate than trying to write it out here. This is how I showed my guys how to start it. see the blue tape w/the two lines? you have to start on the middle after you mark your corner. that's the only way you will get perfect even cuts on both ends. this is how most do it, and it's not correct IF you want perfectly symmetrical left/right borders. All he's done is set the corner of the tile on the line. doing it like this will leave you w/one side smaller than the other: see how the sides of the window don't match? this is what you don't want. your tile guy should be doing a dry layout in order to determine where he starts so he doesn't get this look or these tiny triangles. Again,,,see how the ends don't match below? the right has longer tiles than the left edge. that's because of the way he started his first tile. And don't do these vertical tiles for your edging. get proper bullnose tiles, pencil liner or a Schluter edge. This is a layout board of my herringbone for my shower. took a few hours in order to get this almost perfect. since this was an odd size, and the tiles were even at 3x12, it couldn't be perfect. the right bottom corner triangle is the only portion that doesn't match. luckily, it's not readily visible! Even the subway tiles are perfectly matched. this layout took hours to get exact, even around the niche. 2x6your 3x9 will be 1/3 larger. 3x9 is a good size for a backsplash. this is a regular 3x6. again, a 3x9 will give you 1/3 longer.

Disfromage -- Fireclay offices I guess had just closed when I called last night, and since they are on the west coast they have yet to open today. When I asked about grout when we initially ordered, they didn't have any specific brand recommendations for me, and suggested I contact Mapei and ask them about grout release, sealant, grout type, etc., and I did. Everyone seemed fine with our grout choice except for the tile installers. They said that the ultracolor plus FA would be fine in our bathroom and our laundry applications, but those are both 1/8 " or smaller grout lines. With the larger grout line, 3/16, they recommended the sanded. We bought some Mapei Keracolor S last night just in case and have been letting sit in the kitchen over night to acclimate it some. We are supposed to have grout release applied as well, but it is not here and they didn't have any at Lowe's last night, so now we've got to place that and get it here ASAP.
