Flooring help! Need to transition between vinyl tiles & wood

I am redoing the floors in an open concept rustic lakefront cottage. Floors throughout are natural knotty pine that have darkened to yellowish orange over 50 years. walls are also the same aged knotty pine. I am installing vinyl plank in the kitchen (wet dogs & kids in and out) to lighten things up. Installer says it can go right over the pine floors. I will remove the ww carpet in the living room to expose more of the knotty pine floor and purchase a lighter colored area rug. Now to the dilemma: How do I transition from the vinyl plank to the wood? The kitchen vinyl laid on top of the wood will be higher than the remaining wood in the living room. (Yes, I chose a stone look vinyl, not faux wood)

I know I will need a floor reducer, overlap style. Should the reducer match the vinyl or the wood? Is it personal preference, or is there some guiding rule here? The span where the 2 will join is about 13 feet. Thanks for any help you can give me!
