My garden: drip irrigation, companion plants, beneficial insects
Comments (13)Love the cucumber trellis! But I love it for my melons, not my cucumbers. My cucumbers grow fine up a vertical trellis, but the melons sprawl on the ground. I frequently have problems with voles chewing into the just-ripe melons. I read that voles are not good climbers, so I tried training the melons up a trellis and they did poorly that year. Apparantly they prefer to grow more horizontally. So your trellis for my melons looks like the perfect solution to get them up off the ground while still sprawling horizontally. Comments (26)Kay- It's good to know cleome can reseed. That was one thing I meant to ask. It sounds like a great plant with the roses! Woodyoak- Clematis is always beautiful with roses. I have two metal arches in the fairy garden. Purple clematis would be perfect :) Aimeekitty- Again, your garden is beautiful! I have lavender, but it's Hidcote lavender, which is much hardier here. Catmint and salvia do well here...maybe the penstemon, but I'm not sure about the others. I do envy you your star jasmine. I just love that stuff, so I buy two small bushes at Lowe's every spring (only about $5 each) and put them in big pots, surrounded by white petunias. If I ever get enough money for a sunporch....it will be for star jasmine and an orange tree!!! LOL...See MoreMy New Daylilies & Companion Planting Question
Comments (10)I second catmint and salvia, but with the little warning that if you have cats around, they love to roll in the catmint; they tend to like the dayllily foliage too, unfortunately. I also like daisies, and since you are in a similar zone to mine, you might like to edge with some of the wax begonias. Portulaca is another good low mounding plant, and foxgloves are good background for summer. If you haven't already, take a look at some of the archieved entries in Floota's blog and look at Julias old posts. And be sure to look at Celeste's Pictures They are beautiful, but her zone is very different, however you will still get ideas. And Cindy, who also has a blog. Her garden is a dream. You are going to have such a good time, and remember, any garden is a work in progress. kay...See MoreMy blooming ES with a new companion (plant that is! LOL) - pic
Comments (3)Hi , I am so glad you posted your hosta picture. I made a new garden on the side of my house and I purchased this type of hosta but it came with no name. Thanks to you I know the name ! Thanks much !!! The reason I choose it was due to the contrast it would have with heuchera purple palace! Today I picked up two hydrangeas , one of them is going to be placed in the side garden close to the hosta! Your combination looks wonderful!...See Morejacqueline9CA
