Yes, there are plenty of "drop-in" replacements. My personal favorite source is divinelighting.com (talk to Livingston, he was very helpful). While I was shopping around for appliances, I came across multiple mentions that range hood halogen lights get very hot and uncomfortable. I had some other questions regarding hoods, and thankfully the range hood company representative I spoke with was very helpful, including advising me personally to get the LED bulbs, particularly for the heat concerns and much longer lifespan. I'm using these LED's in my new range hood: https://www.divinelighting.com/bulbrite-ledjc12ww-06watt-led-low-voltage-jc-bipin-g4-base-warm-white-bulb-p-22682.html It's an exact replacement for the G4 base halogen bulbs that came with the hood. Took only a couple of minutes to replace all 4 bulbs, the hood has swing-out light covers, very easy. The only comment I can make is that they're a little dimmer than halogens (noticed that when I replaced 1 of 4, it's maybe 10% dimmer), but I have plenty of light in the kitchen, and the hood is on an island, so it's not that major of an issue. And, considering that they're supposed to last 30,000 hours, spending 5 bucks on them is definitely economical. Love the hood, love the new bulbs! LED is definitely the way to go! Thanks for 'figuring out' what I meant. I have so many details swimming around in my head about this house remodel that sometimes I think I'm brain dead! :-) Of course I meant wattage, not voltage. I wonder if I should re-post the question. The 2 hoods I'm looking at have the following lighting. 2- 40 watt incandescent bulbs in the front (reviewers said the light was quite good, but I was skeptical because they aren't halogens). 2- 20 watt halogen bulbs in the front (someone also mentioned about this lighting being good) Our ceilings are only 8 feet high, so the hood will probably be 28-30" above the cooktop. captsmethwick.....do you like your Broan hood? Do you have the model # by any chance? I was just wondering how quiet it is on the lower settings. I don't mind if it's loud on the highest setting because I don't plan to use that for long periods of time. But one of our options is Broan, so I just wondered. Thank you both for your answers!

I have the Zephyr Typhoon...used the 4 watt Lighting Ever LED's but they stand about 3/16" proud of the hood surface. As long as you replace both bulbs, it's not really all that noticeable or disagreeable. The LED's are so much better than replacing halogens every 30 days (or so it seems). As far as grease escaping thru the opening...that's a non-issue, really. The original halogen bulbs certainly don't form a vapor proof seal so it wouldn't make sense to expect replacement bulbs to block vapors either. To date, there doesn't appear to be a standard size for replacement GU10 LED's. Your best bet is to measure the original halogens and try to find an LED that is the same height AND puts out an acceptable amount of light. I was very pleased with the light amount/ quality of the Lighting Ever LED's & was aware of the variations in the height of the different brands of bulbs so decided to accept a less than perfectly flush fit.

I also think the 100 CRI (outstanding color rendering, important for lighting up food) plus low cost plus not on too often keeps halogen bulbs in use here. LED light bulbs are an electronics device that lights up, and they are more susceptible to heat/moisture/grease/smoke that ventilation hoods must deal with. And only recently have high-quality, reasonably priced LEDs with good color rendering become available. If your hood takes reflector bulbs (MR16, PAR20, PAR30, PAR38) or regular incandescent bulbs there are good LED replacements available now. The LED replacements for tiny halogen bulbs are still too dim.
