PRO6 years agoI think something that combines the traditional look you have going with maybe a more modern color or in this case a little less bold but with a similar Filigree design you would typically find with very traditional decorations.

I have moved the shelf to the side wall and think you should consider stacking art behind the lamps and selecting a larger framed & lined canvas for over the sofa. I would select a rug with some rust tones in it.
All the framed prints together on the dining room wall don't seem to be the same quality as the rest of your room, so I would replace those with an arrangement of hanging decorative plates.

For the dining room I would select a rug that has touches of celery like the color of the ceramic lamps on the sideboard.

Comments (25)Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood. Comments (12)Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I like the idea of some blue in the rug to pull from the photo above the fireplace, but I couldn't seem to find the right blue. A lot of the carpets had too bright of a blue. I'm limited to choices though because I'll only order from somewhere that has a store in my area where I can easily return the rug if I don't like it. I've decided to give this Safavieh carpet a try, I have it on order. I'm hoping the pattern and texture will provide enough interest. I'll work on the chair after that. I wonder if a chair with blue in it will still work if I get this carpet? I can tie the chair in by adding a few more toss cushions to the couch with blue in them and a couple of blue accessories throughout the rest of the space....See MoreRelated Professionals

6 years agoHere are a couple more to consider. The dining area rug has the celery green as well as a bit of the rust from the living area. The living room rug has rust and a bit of the eggplant from the chairs.
