Floating shelves - skim coat over supports?
Comments (4)Haven't done it but don't see why it wouldn't work. If the brackets are heavy enough and you have one of the heavy screws near the bend of the 'L', there shouldn't be much (if any) movement, especially since you're attaching directly to the stud vs on top of drywall. In the past, DS installed the lightweight floating shelves and the drywall always ended up allowing movement around the bracket. Guess who ended up doing the repair work!...See MoreFrameless Cabinets: Ultracraft vs Innermost vs Dewils vs Custom
Comments (12)I spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting Ultracraft with Innermost during my frameless cabinet review. I think Fergusons was surprised I returned so frequently to check their Ultracraft display. Opening and shutting drawers, checking their gliding, going over interior finish, feeling the finish. Ultracraft would have had my contract except for three things: -I noticed the pull split the wood of a front drawer. I asked about it, and they said it was just a display. Things happen, and perhaps it was an accident, but it made me wonder if when mine would be installed, they would split the drawer like that. -They had three whites, none of which were just right for me. The finish was more matte like than satin like. -Their price came in higher and was non-negotiable. I chose Innermost (Elkay Cabinetry) painted frameless and am very satisfied. All cabinets came in without any imperfections which i found amazing for painted (they are also conversion varnish, btw). All interior birch was similar and nicely done, without knots and edging well matched. All painted interiors were done nicely, but regrettably, on the thee 42" tall glass cabinets with mullions, the middle hinges on the box sits right over the glass door mullion, so your shelf must go either above or below the hinge. This makes the shelves not all aligned with the mullions as most competitive cabinet manufacturers have, and aesthetically the way it is suppose to be. I had asked about this prior to order, and am displeased. I'm working with Elkay on a remedy: my suggestion is four $3 Blum hinges on each door side, thus permitting the glass door mullions and inside box shelves to line up with each other. I have two original built in mullion glass cabinets in my dining room and was trying to integrate the look in the kitchen with the connected dining room. It's Elkay's satin paint finish I just marvel at: just a bit of sheen, no plastic offensive look or feel, and it's very durable and easy to keep clean. I love it! I think either Ultracraft or Innermost are very nice choices. I just had a few important particulars that swayed me towards Innermost, one being their paint finish. You do have more space with frameless. This post was edited by SparklingWater on Fri, May 2, 14 at 17:31...See MoreLowes Cabinet Pricing vs custom
Comments (15)i had medallion silverline cabinets installed in April which are the same as the schuler at lowes. with the discounts, lowes was only a tiny bit higher than a local kd. i would say the price with the discount should be about what you will pay. schuler comes with soft close standard. same construction as medallion from a kd. i will say that i was OCD on the cabinet decision and did find that Schulers soft close hardware is better than the silverline, more equivilent to the gold line in medallion. btw if you want to trim costs, check out other door styles. some of the lowes doors are in the silverline, some of them will be the gold line and some are platinum. huge variance from door to door. ie my lancaster door's replica in the gold line was (potter hill) $1500 more and my kd said the construction was exactly the same. my 2 cents is if you like the cabinet, have a local kd quote you the door style in medallion. i was very Leary of working with lowes vs a kd and we did have some finish flaws that my kd took care of for me. the kd at lowes is a crapshoot, could be awful, could be great. if you go into medallion.com, you can figure out what your door is called. they are exact copies with different names. ie my silverline is lancaster but at lowes it was summer hill or something This post was edited by ardcp on Sun, Nov 2, 14 at 16:16...See MoreOpen Shelving vs Cabinets?
Comments (11)Appreciate everyone's insight and comments. Going to take another crack at uploading photos/drawings. My wife wants the kitchen to feel open and not so boxed in Likes the look of shelving with decent proportioned white plates, cups, etc. For whatever reason, she's not a fan of glass front cabinets. Perhaps that's because I personally want to go to the ceiling, with well proportioned/not too ornate crown atop the 2nd box to ceiling. She doesn't want "uppers" with glass because she doesn't care to stage pottery or other things up high--wants more functional and open, and both bottom and uppers being glass, doesn't feel right Perhaps if we didn't go to the ceiling with cabs and had just 40/42" cabinets, she'd be ok with a few strategic glass fronts on the single doors. Personally, I don't want to add a soffit and don't care for the open space between crown and 9'foot ceilings. Is there a style that's more "in" these days? I know it boils down to liking it, but our current cabinets (which are pretty beat up) don't go to the ceiling, so I'm looking for something different. At the end of the day, we are both willing to compromise, but appreciate 3rd party opinions. Price of extra cabinets is not going to break us, can certianly do it, just don't want to start re-arranging the entire placement of everything ( walls plumbing etc) as we bought at the peak and i know the cash isn't coming back -- just doing It because we intend to be here another 7-10 and want to be happy in it we have kids and dog, so dog hair points are certainly "on point" Constantly dusting and re-cleaning will be annoying. Current cabs, illustrating window size. Style of new cabs, though not currently intending to drop down to counters will going to ceiling make window proportion look ridiculous ? Can't go much higher with window because 2nd story is cantalever'd Now leaning towards cupboards all the way around, but concerned about looking too boxed in or window being way undersized relative to cabs Thanks for insight and opinions!...See Morelucky998877
