More open vs more cabinet space??
Comments (20)Make a list of what you need to store, then designate a spot for it. Working it out on paper that way is easier than trying to visualize it in 3-D. Also, if it's too difficult to cannibalize that closet, why not turn it into a pantry or storage for your appliances? We're actually using a huge linen closet between our front door and kitchen for most of the appliances that we don't use on a daily basis. That was the only way we could have the open kitchen we wanted, and I don't mind trekking back and forth once or twice a week. Drawers: 1. Silverware goes ________________ 2. Comments (10)Congrats. You have done a beautiful job so far. We consult on about 30 to 50 kitchens a year. Nice to see one as fun as this. Couple of points. Love the backsplash behind the stove. But any grease pops will hit the wall on either side. What if you do the white subway on either side of the backsplash you have and also on the sink side. It could be beautiful and functional. And since the tiles you have now are aligned, we would do the subway in a running pattern. (staggered) Love the visual idea of open shelving, if its fits your style and needs. And would love to see a little wood brought on to add a touch of warmth. Just look at the bit of warm color in the door mat, and imagine some of that warmth on the walls. And as far as the subway tile, it is totally fine to mix in a bit of traditional with the more contemporary pieces. This keeps the space eclectic and fresh, as well as more unique. Great job so far....See MoreCabinet vs floating shelves pricing
Comments (6)[Edit: I just realized this is an older post, but I'll leave my comment for reference for anyone who may come across this searching on the topic of floating shelving as I was when I found this.} @Madi Larsen, I think your inspiration photo is lovely, but I think what is canceling out your cost is that you're taking what is basically one box with side-opening doors, cutting that box in half, and adding shelving. I'm honestly surprised the quote for your design isn't higher than just for the cabinets alone. If you were replacing an entire box with shelving, then you might see a lower pricing. The most ingenious application I've seen of shelving is to use it in what would otherwise be a blind corner between two solid cabinets on either side of the corner. If you have an area like that anywhere in your design, you might consider using this concept there to save money and open up the space if you want open shelving somewhere....See MoreBlack bottom cabinets? Comments (31)Please note: I DO realize there isn't much cabinet space. We live pretty minimally even for a family. I literally have a few dishes and pans... nothing we don't use is in our current home. We are thinking about an island with storage below... but think it will take up too much space?? We kind of want to see first what we are dealing with first or a chef's prep table. Not sure if that's practical. I want an open airy feel. But my husband likes the black cabinets and the floor color......See MoreUser
