Under Sink Water Heater Confusion
Comments (1)Instant hot water heaters such as the Insinkerator HC-View (which we have) produce small quantities of boiling hot water, for uses such as making tea or oatmeal. The water is much hotter than the normal 120 degrees or so that you use for showering or running your washing machine. These have a small, insulated tank that holds and heats the water until you need it. And they have a special faucet - you really don't want scalding hot water coming out of your regular faucet. There are other under sink hot water heaters that are designed to heat the water to normal hot water temperatures, so that you don't have to wait for hot water to wash your face. One example is the four-gallon Insinkerator W-152. I have not used one of these, but I would want to know how much volume it can handle before I hooked it up to a dishwasher or other high-volume appliance. Also, these are electric, so the cost of heating high volumes of water will be higher than if your house has gas for its main water heater....See Morecabinet size & sink size - confused - can't find the answer!
Comments (6)As long as you don't care about ever replacing the sink down the road, and your cabinets are overbuilt for support for your stone tops, you can "scoop" out the tops of your sink base to fit a 30" sink in a 30" base. I don't recommend it. I've had at least one client who needed to replace her sink, and it wouldn't have been possible if she had done the scooping bit. As it was, she had a 33" sink in a 36" base, and it was doable. The sides of the sink are what transfer the weight of the granite to the ground, and compromising that support is never wise, especially for a heavy bowl full of water....See MoreCabinet run above sink - confused!
Comments (20)My parents kitchen (which is about 30 years old) has a straight run of cabinets across the sink, no extra "head room". Four of us lived in the house (just two living there now) and the sink is used for hand washing every single night. We ranged in heights from 5'1" to 6'1" and no one ever bumped their heads. Think about how you work at a sink; are you really leaned that far forward over the sink? I think functionally, as long as your faucet fits under the cabinet above, it works just fine. Visually of course is a different matter. If it bothers you looking directly at a cabinet, you might prefer to have raised cabinets or open shelving. Personally, in a straight run with no window, I kind of prefer the straight run of cabinets with no change above the sink....See Moreconfused about sink sizes to fit in sink base, help!
Comments (4)It depends on your faucet....so you need to have both the sink & the faucet picked out. In general, a faucet w/the handle on the side that goes front-to-back to turn water on/off will need more room behind it than a faucet w/a handle on top...but it could still be an issue for this one as well. Have you ordered your cabinets yet? If not, consider ordering a sink base that's 3" deeper than normal (i.e., 27"). If you've already ordered it (or have it), then look into pulling it forward 3". That's actually a nice look, btw. If I hadn't had the bay window behind my sink I would have done just that. If you cannot do any of the above, then you need to be very careful what sink & faucet you choose since they need to accommodate the window sill above it. Counters are usually 25-1/4" deep or so, but assume 25" Next, figure the sink will sit 2" or 3" back from there. How much does the window sill stick out? (1-1/2"?) 25" - 3" - 1.5" = 20.5" to work with. Now, look at your faucet specs and see what clearances you need. (Clearance usually includes width of faucet base & handle "swing".) 20.5" - clearance = maximum depth of sink. If you get the 105 and don't center the faucet, instead put it b/w the two sinks, then I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. We have the S405D and did that. The 205 may be more problematical since the bowls are equal sized with no "dip" in the rim, which means the faucet may have to be set further back. Have you considered that if you center the faucet over the 105 that it might not reach into the small bowl completely (again, depending on the faucet you're using)?...See MoreSue 430
