Help! Confused about corner sink measurements
Comments (3)I have been told by 4 different KD that a 42 inch corner sink base will hold a regular double bowl sink of 32 inches total width. The cabinet face will depend on if you have frameless or framed cabinets, but in the KM line I am using the bas of 32 inches has a face on the door of approx 22 inches. I believe it was LWO who stated on the forum that she recommends a 48 inch base cabinet for most corner sinks. Personally I don't have that much room. I am using a 42 inch base cabinet and will use a double bowl 1 3/4 bowl sink with a sink exterior measurement of 31.5 inches. It will sit back 3.5 inches from the front of the cabinet. Do a search of corner sinks both here and in the FKB and you will see several different bases with different size sinks....See MoreCabinets above sink-help needed to finalize layout.
Comments (15)Greenhaven and live wire oak, I can't move the sink to the left as it will then be visible from the front door. I am not great at keeping up with the dishes while I am running after the kids. It is one of the major peeves with my current layout and a starting point of the redesign. I realized while crunching numbers lying awake early in the morning(anyone else do that??) -the KD has the numbers wrong on the wall. The wall is drawn 10 inches narrow. In which case, I can switch the DW and the 18" 3 DB and push the sink in a few inches more. I should then be able to do a 24" wide short above-the- sink cabinet flanked by two 15" wall cabinets. I think having a shelf will look better then. I need to play around with the software to see it. Texas_gem, I like the idea of doing it DIY after the fact. DH is quite handy-so he should be able to figure it out. Sjhockeyfan, sorry for messing up ur user handle earlier. I was half asleep then! Thanks for the input. I was planning on a light rail-so will remember to account for that when we decide on the cabinet....See MoreThoughts on a cabinet resting on the counter on a sink run
Comments (10)So grade your countertop so water moves towards the sink. When I had my MBR Marble finally fabricated, I wanted a routed edge around the sink. I wanted my faucets to sit in the route. My faucets are Kohler 'Alterna' (discontinued) that are a "waterfall" type. Unfortunately, when on to a tiny drip, surface tension takes the water back under the faucet, only to run all over the counters, which are level. Putting in that route keeps that water heading into the sink. My fabricator's first suggestion that when polished, it could be miniscule-y graded towards the sink. They didn't have the router. Evidently what I wanted is extremely custom. But, I didn't want the grade, I wanted my route. So? They figured it out somehow. Enough about me. I like the look of cabinets on the counter, too. I'd also caulk around the base of the cabinet so water couldn't get underneath and mold and rot, etc....See Morewhat to do with cabinets above sink?
Comments (9)Even if you had cabinets straight across with the standard 18" clearance between the counters and uppers, you won't hit your head working at the sink. You're not going to bend over any more at the sink than you would bending over to plug an appliance in under your other cabinets. You don't hit your head now doing that, do you? The issue isn't head clearance. It's clearance for your faucet. Lots of today's higher pull out faucet types will barely fit in 18" of clearance, and they don't look right with only an inch or so of space. You have to pick your faucet right. The other issue that people think of is the claustrophobia of having a blank surface to stare at while you load your DW.Using glass, or open shelving can help with that, but even so, you don't spend as much time there as you think you do. With only 20% of your kitchen time spent cleaning up, that won't impact you greatly in your work experience. Open Shelving. Now, if you prep right next to your sink, that's a horse of another color. Most time in your kitchen is spent prepping. That's when you look to see if you can add a second water source elsewhere in order to create a prep zone away from the cleanup sink. One solution if you can't create a prep area elsewhere is to raise the wall cabinets so there is 24" of clearance between the counters and cabinets. Using shorter cabinets in a horizontal layout often helps this to look cohesive....See Morejellytoast
