My stepkids have a very on again-off again relationship with their biomom. She is unreliable, unstable, they cannot and do not trust her, and they very seldom want to go with her or spend more than a very short amount of time with her. But even though she walked out on them without so much a backwards glance, only comes around when she wants money from my DH or to make thier dad and I's life a living hell they still love her and I think they feel like calling me mom is somehow going to hurt her, so they don;t do it, even though she has hurt them over and over and hasn't given it a second thought. You sound like a great guy and your son sounds lucky to have you in his life, but perhaps he feels like he will somehow betray his bio-dad, eventhough he doesn't even know him.
