I am feeling lucky!!!

Monday is our local county fair Flower and Rose show! They are having it about a month early this year, which I feel is lucky for me!!!

In spite of all the rain and thunderstorms we've had recently, my roses are looking GREAT! Full of blooms, big and beautiful (to me anyway!)

So I am thinking that by them having it early this year, it is actually better, since we have had all this wonderful rain to make them look their best!

Now, two years ago I did get first place for all my entries, and last year I not only won first place, but also Grand Champion! ( But don't let me mislead you - this is a very, very smalltown county fair, LOL!) It was for me, however, a great start to exhibiting!

So, on Monday, I will be showing for my third year and with, what seems to me, my best roses ever! I am just so very excited!

and don't forget to get photos, photos, photos... And yes, a brag ribbon/trophy photo!!! come now, don't be modest !!! just pile it on here! We'd love to celebrate with you!

Good luck to you! I hope you do well at this show. Are you going to enter any of the shows in the KY State Fair? You really should. (My mom is Assistant Superintendant of the Plants and Flowers Division of the fair - enough bragging and plugging here!) The Amateur Days show is Aug. 20 and 21, and is a good way to get your feet wet in a bigger show, according to Mom. You have to register by July 1, but of course you don't have to actually enter if you find you have nothing worthy on the day of the show. You can register online and they send the entry tags to you. I have already registered for this year - first time ever for me (Mom finally talked me into trying it)!

Molly, I have one from Chamblee's (the Vintage clone appears different) that has been in the ground for years in a less than perfect spot and this is still one of the best Chinas I grow. Mine is about 5 x 5, repeat is excellent and health couldn't be better, even in a shady spot. The picture is from several years ago when she was still maturing. Here is a link that might be useful:

Congrats to you Steve! I just got H. Hellwigiana, H. lacunosa(very big too!), and H. Ruthie. It's an awesome experience to open a box with your new additions! I have another one coming this week, I think it is called H. Magnifica? It has big white fragrant flowers. Cannot wait!!

I love your hardware! I just received an order from House of Antique Hardware too and thought I should share my experience. I ordered unlacquered brass knobs and bin pulls (definitely working with a beer budget here, too, but our 1928 house has the original brass hardware throughout and I was trying to keep it consistent). It helped the I found a coupon code online for 20% off my order. Anyway, the knobs were beautiful, but my bin pulls arrived with blemishes all over the surface of most of them. Clearly I was devastated (cue your soap opera music again!) and called House of Antique Hardware right away. They were amazing. I sent them a few pictures so they could see what was going on, and they immediately shipped out replacement pieces for the entire order! My bin pulls Also I found a great deal on eBay for solid brass cabinet latches. I believe they worked out to be just under $4 each and the quality is (surprisingly) very good! Now to get my cabinets installed and painted so I can put the hardware on!

Joanne - I think i is always in a late spring, but dates are a bit different every time. I want to go this time, but I am taking care of my hubby - and so far I do not have anybody lined up to stay with him when i am gone. As long as the leaves are alive - you can try to rehydrate them.. I would just recut them and wrap them in a wet paper towel. Usually it replenishes the lost water and they regain their turgor. If they are dry to a herbarium specimen - it is evidently no use - but if they are just limp - most of the time - you can restore them just right. RR consists of amateurs - so they do not necessary know how to pack the leaves. i would prefer slightly limp to rot - and rot can happen easily if the leaf is wrapped in a soggy dripping piece of towel or cotton wool. A little piece of humid paper towel and small square of foil or saran wrap to seal the end - works better. Even if the very end rots - you have enough stem left. And send longer stems on leaves - for the same reason - your addressee will have something to cut off. Plus - puff some air in a bag. Your breath is humid plus extra trapped air pads the baggie. I am sure you already know it - but if you wont share it with your RR buddies... they will never learn. I.

Thank yous to serenasyh and jplamp! I was out in my gardens tonight and just wished I could freeze time and spend forever right there! This is my 6th year growing roses, and I believe this is the best they've EVER looked! They just captivate me! Now that they have matured and the digging up here and moving that there has been done, and replacing this or that one, I feel like they are the most beautiful they've been! I will definitely post some pics, maybe tomorrow :)

Jplamp - I will see how my little ol' town fair does, and then I am supposed to show in the next event with the Bowling Green Rose Society. If that goes well, I would love to go to Louisville! Who knows? Maybe I will get lucky! But, I wanted to thank you for the info and the invite!
